And that’s a wrap! UK Metals Expo now complete ! A fantastic show meeting some great people.

I still can’t believe I’ve managed to get here. As hectic as my final semester at The University of Sheffield gets, I can’t help but be proud at the progress that my team and I have been able to make at Project: Kestrel in such a short span of time. In just the last year, we: ☀️Sacrificed our summers to redesign our drone, building on the success of previous iterations 👥 Recruited more than 40 students, bringing the team to a total of 60, including a dedicated Marketing and Finance team 🛠️ Trained new engineers in technical skills like CAD, CFD, electrical testing and soldering, working with them to apply that knowledge practically to a UAV 🛩️ Manufactured completely new structural components, including our wing and tail boxes, wing sections, fuselage and cargo release mechanism, which are all complete or nearing completion 🔌 Selected, validated, purchased and wired an avionics system with 20+ powered components, which is now being integrated into our fuselage 👕 Designed a new line of merchandise for the project this year (which turned out amazing thanks to our supplier TwentyTwo!) 🤝 Secured partnerships with the likes of MG Metals Limited, PCBWay and others, building on the success of previous years through monetary and technical support And now, closer than ever to our first test flight, I can’t wait to see what we achieve. My heart and soul has gone into scaling this team up since I joined it in 2021 as a Flight Control Engineer. Back then, it was just a team of 10, and I had little idea of how to coordinate work as an engineer, let alone a project lead. Thousands of hours later, after putting blood, sweat and tears towards not just the manufacturing and integration but the organisational logistics, we’re closer than ever to our dream: competing at the 2024 Institution of Mechanical Engineers UAS challenge in July this year. This opportunity from the Co-Curricular Activities team and Peter Mylon has genuinely been the most life changing thing I’ve done during university - getting the chance to play the part of chief engineer, CEO, team lead and so many other hats. So thank you! From presenting at conferences around the UK and showcasing Kestrel’s efforts, to working hands on with other students to bring lessons from our lectures into practice. I couldn’t have got to where I am without the help of my friends either. See Lloyd Miller, Alick Brownlee and Tommy Chan hard at work below 😄 and so many others that I can’t thank enough.
