🎬 We're excited to spotlight Tapestry of Time — an innovative mixed-media animation film that brings to life the story of migration to and from the British Isles across the ages – from the Ice Ages to today. ❄️➡️🏙️ Created by directors and animators Osbert Parker , a three-time BAFTA nominee, alongside Luke Ramsay, Tapestry of Time, is a film commissioned by the Migration Museum for our #AllOurStories exhibition. The film uses metaphors to emphasise fragility and human resilience, with a changing horizon line symbolising a timeline through history. 🔮🌀Behind the scenes, the process: Osbert and Luke created storyboards for the entire film, using research material collated by Nanda Valdez, to inform the visual language. Digital techniques were then used to transfer paper designs into moving pictures and placed onto an animatic timeline across three screens. Other techniques include artistic stop-motion experiments and AI that allow for innovative ways to bring two dimensional etchings to life in three dimensional space. With a cubist montage approach, the work also captures multiple perspectives and moments in time, at once. The sound design, created by Rob Szeliga is a unique, evocative soundscape from the past, enhancing storytelling with a deep sense of place, time, and people This is a timely and important artwork that captures the many people, communities, and significant events that have shaped Britain. And we're excited to say that it is available for everyone to see, for free, here at the Migration Museum as part of the #AllOurStories exhibition. 🌎 💫 Open Thurs–Sat | 11am–5.30pm With special thanks to our #AllOurStories funders at Arts Council England and supported by the #NationalLottery players, Dr. Martens plc’s Foundation, Kusuma Trust UK and the THE LINBURY TRUST. Your support makes everything possible. #GoodCauses 📹Osbert Parker and Luke Ramsay 🔊Rob Szeliga 📖 Nanda Valdez 🤖C.G. Exploring how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are.
About us
The Migration Museum explores how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are – as individuals, as communities, and as a nation. Migration is a pressing contemporary issue and is at the centre of polarised political and online debate. But there’s an underlying story of comings and goings stretching back many centuries. And this story goes to the heart of who we are today. Britain has thousands of museums, but none comprehensively focused on this important theme that connects us all. The time is right for a highly relevant, accessible visitor attraction that shines a light on who we are, where we come from and where we are going. From our current home in the heart of Lewisham Shopping Centre, we stage engaging exhibitions and dynamic events, alongside a far-reaching education programme for primary, secondary, university and adult learners. We have a growing digital presence and convene a knowledge-sharing Migration Network of museums and galleries across the UK. 📢 We're thrilled to announce a new funding award from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to support the development of our collections, curatorial and interpretation strategy in advance of our move to our permanent home in the City of London in 2027. With this award, the Migration Museum will work alongside partners with nationally significant collections to uncover forgotten heritage in migration-related projects that may no longer be accessible - ensuring these stories are not lost. We will also create a prototype for a ‘dispersed’ digital national migration collection, and develop a UK-wide strategy for a 2027 campaign to identify 100 objects and stories that can be formally acquired and accessioned into the Migration Museum’s physical ‘collection’ 🏛️🌟 We are proud to have extremely dedicated and talented volunteers at the Migration Museum and we hope this project will support them to build up their skills in research, story collection and consultation. This invaluable support from the National Lottery come as they celebrate their 30th birthday, marking three decades of funding amazing projects and making incredible things happen in communities, sports, heritage and the arts. We are proud to be included among these inspiring organisations 🥳 #NationalLottery30 📸© Hamish Irvine Photographer 📸© Nancy Singh 📸© Elzbieta Piekacz

A historic evening at the House of Lords! Huge thanks to Baroness Janet Whitaker for hosting a special reception last week that brought together passionate supporters of the UK's first permanent Migration Museum. The evening was illuminated by our brilliant trustee David Olusoga OBE, whose powerful words (delivered with characteristic warmth and humour) reminded us why Britain's migration story needs and deserves a permanent home. We also heard from the inspiring Debbie Weekes-Bernard and our CEO Sophie Henderson. It was a great opportunity to bring together representatives from across the political spectrum, London's leading organisations and our future City of London neighbours. These connections will be instrumental in creating a museum that tells all of our stories. We're looking forward to future conversations. #MigrationMuseum #BritishHistory #London #Heritage

We're thrilled to announce that Christian Sinibaldi's portrait of Allyson Williams has been shortlisted for the 2024 Portrait of Britain Awards! 📸✨ "These portraits spotlight Britain’s heritage and modern identity. This year’s collection captures essential social issues, from healthcare and economic challenges to LGBTQIA+ and racial justice movements." – British Journal of Photography, organisers of the Portrait of Britain Awards 💙 Allyson's portrait is part of Sinibaldi's commission for our Heart of the Nation exhibition, highlighting the contributions of people from all over the world who have come to Britain to work in the NHS over the past 75 years. Christian Sinibaldi’s long-term collaboration with the Migration Museum includes earlier works such as his I'm Hackney project, featured in our 100 Images of Migration collection, as well as his photography of the Calais 'Jungle', which was featured in one of our first-ever exhibitions, Call Me by My Name (2016), and also in our current exhibition, All Our Stories. Christian was also a mentor for our Moving Stories – Lewisham competition for young people in 2022. Visit our current exhibition All Our Stories at the Migration Museum in Lewisham Shopping Centre to see some of Sinibaldi's photography of the Calais 'Jungle' in person. Here's an update from our CEO Sophie Henderson on the growing momentum behind the UK's first permanent Migration Museum! 👇 Every person in Britain has a migration story. Whether it's their own journey, their parents', or that of more distant ancestors. These stories deserve a permanent home where they can be shared, celebrated, and preserved for future generations. Want to be part of this historic journey? Follow us to stay updated on our progress toward creating the UK's first permanent Migration Museum. 🏛️
With our Annual Lecture taking place last week and a House of Lord’s reception happening today, it is hugely encouraging to see so many people interested in helping us to create a permanent Migration Museum for the UK. Our lecture, delivered by Sunder Katwala and chaired by Rafael Behr, had a wonderfully engaged audience, with great questions. The buzz afterwards indicated that people are really up for deeper conversations about migration. We’re all very excited about the spaces that this museum can create. Many thanks to longstanding supporters who came along, as well as new ones from business, academia, the arts and more - including Eastern City BID, Merchant Taylors' Hall, City of London Corporation, Mark Gettleson and The City Belonging Project, Shravan Joshi MBE, Alex Sutton, Shuyeb Muquit and Fragomen

"The Migration Museum in Lewisham is an emotional, skilfully curated, brilliantly thought-out account of a changing geography over the last few decades. It is impossible not to indulge in the person-centred artistry, and let the authentic narratives tap into our deepest sense of empathy, shame for turning a blind eye, and togetherness when acknowledging our own diversity and human belonging struggle." - Nadia Sacoor on her recent visit to the Migration Museum Nadia, thank you for capturing the essence of what we aim to share through the museum.
