We are a group whose members are committed to planting over 1 million trees each in response to the Climate Emergency

About us

“The most important question each of us must ask is, ‘Are we being good ancestors?’” - Jonas Salk (creator of the polio vaccine) The Million Tree Pledge is a collaborative initiative bringing together businesses and individuals to make a bold commitment to plant 1 million trees each in the coming years. Led by a group of established and independent small businesses in the UK, the Pledge has two parts: 1. A commitment to plant over 1 million trees by a specific date (most pledgers have chosen 2025). 2. A commitment to find at least two other pledgers, ensuring that the initiative grows exponentially. Through the Ecologi.com platform, pledgers donate to the Eden Reforestation Project. With the mantra ‘plant trees, save lives’, this charity reduces extreme poverty and restores healthy forests by employing local people (often women) to plant millions of trees every year – thereby creating employment opportunities for disadvantaged groups, while planting trees with a focus on sustainability and biodiversity - such as Mangroves in the Madagascan rainforest absorbs four times more C02 than the average tree. Since 2004 they have planted almost 500,000,000 trees creating 4,850,313 workdays for people in extreme poverty. It is estimated humanity has cut down over 3 trillion trees (almost 50% of the world's total), with a current rate of 15 billion a year being lost. We want to help create a world where hundreds of thousands of businesses and individuals pledge to plant 1 million trees each over the next decade - drawing down millions of tonnes of C02, slowing down climate change and restoring biodiversity to deforested areas globally. Launched this year, we come together under the call to #RiseUpDrawDown, and recognise that as successful businesses, it is our responsibility to do more than simply offset our own emissions. Our aim is to have 1000 pledgers (1 billion trees pledged) by the end of 2021, with the goal of getting tens of thousands by 2025.

  • The shade we enjoy on a hot summer day, the crisp air we breathe, and the juicy fruits we enjoy - these aren't just gifts from nature. They're the legacy of our ancestors who had the foresight to plant trees. Think about it. The grand oak in your local park, the apple orchard on the outskirts of town, even the tree-lined streets that make your neighborhood beautiful - all of these exist because someone, decades or even centuries ago, decided to plant a seed or a sapling. Our ancestors understood something profound: that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, and the second-best time is now. They were being "good ancestors," thinking beyond their own immediate needs to provide for future generations. So, the question we need to ask ourselves is: How are we living up to their example? What are we doing to be good ancestors to the generations that will follow us? In an era of climate change and environmental challenges, this question is more crucial than ever. The trees we plant today won't just provide shade, oxygen, and fruit - they'll be crucial allies in the fight against global warming, soil erosion, and biodiversity loss. That's why we at the Million Tree Project are committed to planting trees on a massive scale. We're not just doing it for ourselves, but for our children, grandchildren, and all the generations to come. We're striving to be the good ancestors that our descendants will thank, just as we thank those who came before us. But we can't do it alone. We need every one to join us in this mission. Whether you plant a single tree in your backyard or take the Million Tree Pledge, you're making a commitment to the future. You're choosing to be a good ancestor. So, let's get planting. Let's create forests of hope, orchards of possibility, and groves of resilience. Let's be the ancestors our future deserves. Are you ready to leave a legacy of green? Join us in the Million Tree Pledge today. #BeAGoodAncestor #MillionTreePledge #LegacyOfGreen #PlantForTheFuture

  • On August 4, 2024, at around 10:50 GMT+2, Mount Etna reminded us once again of nature's raw power. As ash covered nearby towns and disrupted flights at Catania airport, it got us thinking about our mission here at the Million Tree Pledge. First and foremost, we're sending love and support to everyone directly or indirectly affected by this event. Our thoughts are with you. While we can't stop volcanoes, we CAN take action against climate change. Each tree we plant is like a tiny soldier in our fight for a healthier planet. They absorb CO2, prevent soil erosion, and create habitats - all things that help mitigate the impact of natural disasters and climate shifts. Imagine if the areas around Mount Etna had even more robust forests. They could help filter ash from the air, stabilize the soil, and provide additional buffers between volcanic activity and human settlements. This is why our work is so crucial. We're not just planting trees; we're building resilience into our ecosystems. We're creating natural infrastructure that will help communities worldwide better withstand environmental challenges. So let's use this moment as motivation. Whether you're in Sicily dealing with volcanic ash or anywhere else in the world, you can make a difference. Join us in the Million Tree Pledge. Let's be the change our planet needs! #MillionTreePledge #ClimateAction #Sustainability #MountEtna #NaturalDisasters #TreePlanting

I was equally sad to see the recent Panorama documentary portray Ecologi | B Corp™ in a negative light. I’ve collaborated with many of the team for years as a member of Million Tree Pledge. I experience them as a passionate, Purpose-driven B Corp trying to solve real world problems. I’m all for holding people to account, especially given the controversy over non verified carbon credits last year. But we also need to encourage business to restore nature alongside rapidly reducing emissions. So, here we hit a paradox where, if we’re not careful, we stick a spanner in the works just as we’re accelerating to make progress. #criticalthinking #doyourownhomework #openconversationaboutcomplexissues #lostinttranslation

I cannot believe this just happened. A secret recording of our sales team by BBC Panorama, which cherry-picked a conversation out of context and totally twisted it's portrayal. Last night, on BBC One at 8pm, Panorama aired an episode on "Big Brands Green Claims Uncovered". We already knew they were going to publish an analysis that was roundly debunked by experts regarding funding projects preventing deforestation (see blog link in comments). But the surprise was a secret film of our team's meeting was exceptionally misleading in its edit. What a huge prime time TV audience will have seen: two members of our team being secretly recorded where a colleague said that after measuring your footprint you need to reduce your footprint, "it doesn’t matter how much, it could be reduced by one tonne", then offset your emissions and you’re Carbon Neutral. What was not shown: that this was an example of the difference between Carbon Neutral Standard (you can just offset your footprint) and the far superior Corporate Standard for Net Zero (which requires a min of 90% actual footprint reductions to be made), which is what the team advocated for and recommended. In a program about integrity, transparency, and revealing the truth, it’s beyond belief the measures the BBC Panorama team have gone to make the narrative work for them.

Happy Birthday to the Million Tree Pledge!!! 3 years ago today a small group of us launched the pledge - for small businesses to take big action on the climate crisis by pledging to plant 1 million trees by a set date (as well as racing to zero emissions). Fast forward to today and we have: - Over 16 million trees planted - 100 pledgers At the beginning we were inspired by the question, "Are you being a good ancestor?" And it's never been more relevant today. Especially on Earth Day, 2024. If you're reading this and you know someone who might be interested in talking bold climate action. Please send them my way.

  • The story of Jadav Payeng, also known as the "Forest Man of India," is an inspiring example of how one person's dedication to tree planting can make a significant impact on the environment. Jadav Payeng was just a young boy when he noticed the alarming rate at which the wildlife and greenery surrounding his home on Majuli Island in Assam, India, were disappearing. Moved by the loss of biodiversity and the increasing erosion of the land, Payeng took it upon himself to reforest the barren landscape, one tree at a time. In 1979, Payeng began planting trees on the sandbars near his home. He collected seeds and seedlings from nearby villages and nurseries, nurturing them in the harsh, sandy soil. Over time, he developed innovative techniques to help the young plants survive, using earthen pots and bamboo platforms to protect them from floods and predators. Despite facing ridicule from some villagers who believed his efforts were futile, Payeng persevered. His hard work paid off as the once-barren landscape slowly transformed into a thriving forest. The ecosystem he cultivated soon became home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including endangered species like rhinos, tigers, and elephants. As the years went by, Payeng's forest grew to span over 1,300 acres, earning him recognition as the "Forest Man of India." His remarkable achievements eventually caught the attention of international media, environmentalists, and government agencies, who acknowledged his dedication to conservation and ecological restoration. Jadav Payeng's inspiring story exemplifies the power of individual action and the profound impact one person can have on the environment. If one man can have this much impact on the environment, because he saw the need, took action and stayed committed, imagine the level of impact we will all have if we commit to the million tree pledge and contribute our quota to improving the conditions of the world we live in. Don't just imagine, visit https://lnkd.in/dnpeVGM now, to see how you can become "the forest person or organisation" in this world.
