When it comes to young people we should focus on activity rather fitness… Today marks the 13th annual National Fitness Day (NFD) organised by ukactive. Fitness and health remain high on the public agenda, with the new Labour government prioritising preventative measures and the IPPR recently publishing its report on the nation's health, aptly named "Our Greatest Asset." The effectiveness of awareness days in supporting better health outcomes is questionable. Evaluation is limited, and the intention is probably more about awareness-creating and policy-shaping.. Language and Messaging I've never been comfortable focussing on "fitness." It's not neutral and often carries associations with lean, muscular 'ideal' bodies. This can be problematic, especially for young people. Fitness is a likely outcome of being active and we have longstanding challenges ensuring all young people are active. Top 3 Challenges for Educators and Coaches 1. Support Every Young Person form a Positive Relationships with Physical Activity - Focus on safe, positive experiences rather than health messages about future risks. - Prioritise both physical and emotional safety in inclusive spaces. - Equip young people to manage their own physical activity journey throughout life. 2. Redefine Success as Being Active - Move beyond competitive definitions of success. Gly engaging in activity is a win so prepare young people to find a long term place for PA in their lives. - Celebrate those who find joy in activities, not just those who excel competitively. 3. Develop Relevant and Relatable Competencies - Personalise movement development to reflect how individuals wish to engage in activities. - Avoid alienating young people by assuming all want performance-focused engagement. - Recognize that performance sport itself is not a panacea. It too can sometimes lead to physical and mental harm. About miMove At miMove, our mission is to help every young person build and sustain a positive relationship with physical activity. We provide a platform for journaling, sharing, and understanding physical activity, collecting valuable data to support educators and stakeholders in creating environments where every young person can thrive physically and emotionally. Our vision is a world where all young people, regardless of background, have the opportunity and support to engage with physical activity in ways that enhance their lives. Through innovative technology and data-driven insights, we aim to revolutionise global youth engagement in physical activity, fostering more connected, confident, and healthier lives. The start up journey is full of highs and lows. It tests founders in ways we never fully understood when we set off on our mission to make the world more active by creating a platform that supports young people and allows adults to have access to information that shows they care and helps them make better decisions to ensure more kids develop a positive relationship with physical activity. Inevitably there are times that we question our sanity. Not that we don’t believe in the mission or the product, but it’s the relentless challenge of convincing others especially investors. Validation comes when a new school (or other organisation) purchases an annual subscription. miMove is not expensive but this still requires trust and teachers/coaches to appreciate the benefits that miMove will bring. But we are gaining even more satisfaction seeing the numbers of schools that are re-subscribing. This shows they not only get it but they are reaping genuine value from the platform. We appreciate all the teachers and students we’ve been fortunate to work with. We learn from them everyday as we work to move the dial on the long standing challenges associated with young people’s engagements with sport and physical activity.

In this months newsletter, we share some useful resources on topical issues. Eden Anderson coaches gymnastics Leeds Beckett University and has just started her vlog site on inclusion is sport and PE. She kindly consented to us featuring her intro piece. Amanda Visek shares her thinking on What Makes Sport Fun for Young People via Working With Parents In Sport Ltd One of the most topical issues at the moment is the relationship and impact of screen time on young people. We feature a short, research informed piece in the The Conversation US that explains that devices need not be viewed simplistically as just a 'bad thing'. We also feature HBSC England report into Young People's Activity Rates. Check out the newsletter at https://hubs.la/Q02B34Qc0
