    A fantastic Day 2 of the Blanchard SLII® Experience with Martin Lulham and the M-Tech Systems Ltd team today, at the start of the company’s talent development program 😃 The participants have really embraced getting to grips with the new situational language of leadership, knowing their D2s from their D4s and matching with their appropriate S1 or S4 style of leadership, and each one in between. Today was practice, practice, practice, with opportunities to diagnose development levels across a range of scenarios, then matching with the appropriate level of directive and supportive behaviours. Three key takeaways that they reinforced when applying their SLII® skills: 1️⃣ The diagnosis trap. Beware of determining development levels too hastily, basing a judgement on how competent and committed the individual is to others tasks and responsibilities. Development Levels are never about the ‘whole’ person, and instead the focus is always on the specific goal or task. In other words, don’t generalise development levels and people! Also, don’t diagnose to fit your leadership style preference! It’s about the individuals development level first and always. 2️⃣ It’s LOW not NO! In the four leadership styles there is always a combination of directive and supportive behaviours, and in some cases this can be classed as being Low, but it’s never No. Even when working with a highly competent, self reliant individual, there should always be clarity on what’s being done, what success looks like and what the time frames are. It’s just in that scenario, there is little or no need for the manager to ‘direct’ proceedings. That also doesn’t mean the line manager isn’t using supportive behaviours, indeed they may simply act as someone to bounce ideas off of, with a general “I’m here if and when you need me” sentiment. 3️⃣ Leading situationally isn’t something you do to someone; you do it with them. Unquestionably, the real power of learning the new language of leadership that SLII® outlines, comes from a shared understanding of what an individual needs from their manager, and then by aligning on what level of direction and support is needed. Teaching someone else the language and approach of SLII® both up-skills the other person, alongside reinforcing the skills of the situational leader. SLII® has been in my world for such a long time and is as powerful today as it has always been. 💥 What helps SLII® remain as the world's most widely taught leadership model is its innate ability to stay relevant through changing generations. The SLII® model is PROVEN, time-tested and up to date in a way that enables leaders to build deeper relationships and inspire better results.
