Well done to the colleagues in our Transportation team who have completed the meticulous restoration of the impressive, glazed gable ends of the Grade II-listed Stoke-on-Trent station roof. Originally built between 1846 and 1848, the station was designed by civil engineer, Sir Henry Arthur Hunt, in a Victorian ‘Neo-Jacobean manor house style’ – which typically features columns and arches to create a sense of grandeur. After years of exposure to the elements, the wooden timber gable framework and steel trusswork had fallen into a state of disrepair and were becoming a hazard, with risk of pieces of wood and glass falling on the train tracks. In a multi-million-pound project spanning 12 months, the roof has been restored to its former glory with works including the restoration of wooden and wrought iron frames which support over 200 glass panels, the removal of old glazing, decayed wooden frames, the crafting and installation of new wooden frames, and repair of corroded steel trusswork. There are just over two weeks to go until seven acts from across Ireland take to the stage to compete in a live Lip Sync Battle in aid of our 2024 Charity Partner- the Julian Benson Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The night brought together over 300 members of our supply chain who support our project teams to successfully deliver world-class infrastructure. Colleagues in our Transportation team recently used one of their Giving Back Days to volunteer at the Fields Millennium Green Trust which maintains a community greenspace local to their current project. Fields Millennium Green is semi-natural, with grasslands, woodland, an orchard, a natural play area and is a valuable community resource in an area of high social and economic deprivation. Over the course of the day our colleagues focused on enhancing the community park by replacing damaged and missing gravel boards along pathways and assisting with general upkeep. The day was both productive and rewarding, with each activity contributing to the park's appearance and accessibility. Maggie Sweet, Volunteer Coordinator at the Fields Millennium Green Trust: “Thank you so much to the Murphy team for their hard work. The greenspace is highly valued by the community as an area where they can enjoy nature, walk their dogs and take children to play. Without groups such as Murphy visiting, our trust would find it impossible to keep the site clean, safe to walk around, and looking attractive.
