  • This is an example of a mummers’ sword, found within our folklore collection. Mummers’ plays are a type of folk play, which can be traced back at least as far as the thirteenth century. Traditionally, members of the local community dressed in costumes and performed whilst travelling from house to house. The plays can involve sword dances, which tend to include blunted sticks made of steel or wood, like this example. Often, the group would hold the hilt of their sword and the end of their neighbours, and create various shapes by ‘dancing’ with them. #folklorefriday

  • Happy Valentine’s Day from the Museum of Cambridge! Wishing you a day filled with joy and love. Did you know that young fenfolk in the nineteenth century would express their love by gifting their sweetheart a straw token? This was made from three ears of corn tied in a knot. The recipient of the gift would then either pin it across their heart, to show the feelings were mutual, or on their right, to let their hopeful lover down gently.
