Supporting businesses and organisations to confidently hire someone who has a criminal conviction.

About us

Myrtos Consultancy is founded by experienced criminal justice professional Esther Champion. We break down misconceptions around hiring someone with a conviction by educating and empowering organisations and businesses. We do this through a personalised and tailored approach offering 1-1 advice and support, as well as face to face or online workshops to you and your team or managers. We will also signpost you to organisations who can support you to find the ideal candidate for your company, as well as organisations who can provide 1-1 mentoring for that individual (if they want it). At Myrtos Consultancy we believe that everyone should be given a fair chance to work, grow, and thrive, regardless of their past. So many individuals who leave prison or who have a conviction feel ashamed and without a sense of purpose. Prison, or a life of crime, can often feel like the only place where they are understood. Why Myrtos? Well, the word Myrtos is the Greek for Myrtle, which comes from the Hebrew word for the name Esther. Esther is the founder of Myrtos Consultancy and has a heart to see everyone realise their potential and be accepted for who they are not what they have done.

Happy New year! Here are some great examples of companies who #hire people who have a #criminal record, many of whom have recently left prison. But, not everyone who has a criminal record has been to #prison. In fact, the majority of people who have a record have NOT been to prison, yet can still struggle to get #employment. If you're looking at making one #positive change this year, how about exploring what hiring someone who has a criminal record might look like, in particular those who have left prison within 6 months. If this sounds a bit daunting, and you'd like some support or advice, then get in touch and we can #educate and #empower you. www.myrtosconsultancy.com

Around a quarter of the UK’s working-age population has a criminal record. Companies like Virgin, Greggs, Greene King, and Timpsons are leading the way in hiring ex-offenders. So, why are more businesses opening their doors to ex-convicts now? Mollie Malone explains

Whether it’s baking bread, brewing beer, or coding software, the evidence could not be clearer. When we create the opportunities for those leaving prison to thrive in work - and by work, I don't mean a less-than-minimum-wage job in a warehouse, I mean fulfilling, well-salaried work that they've elected to do, are passionate about and/or have had agency in choosing - then then the results speak for themselves. • At Myrtos, we love to read about what's happening in #prisons that lead to increased #employment opportunities for those being released. This is a great example of how men and women in prison are being trained in an industry that they can get meaningful work in. Plus, #coffee is awesome, so at Myrtos, we're even more positive about these initiatives. If you would like a conversation to understand more about what hiring someone who has recently left prison might look like and how we, at Myrtos, can support you, then contact us to book in a #free conversation 🤩. www.myrtosconsultancy.com

We just wrapped up an exciting project about the relationship between specialty coffee and social sustainability. There were so many insights during the cross-sector dialogues in Bergen and Stavanger. One big surprise was to see how institutional entrepreneurs are working in prisons with specialty coffee as a way to provide vocational education and working opportunities. (Read more at the link!) Thanks to my colleague from VID vitenskapelige høgskole Norma, Hoi-lam Wong, PhD and the VID students who participated, Stine Tybring Aune and Esther Mbale, as well as project partners, Liv Karin Lund Thomassen, Christian Nesset and Øyvind Økland. The next step is to focus on the programs in the prisons with a new project in the works. Stay tuned! • From the Corbett Network: "The Ministry of #Justice is launching a review of sentencing #policy to resolve the growing crisis in prisons. They have emphasised the possibility of introducing house arrest as an alternative to prison sentences in England and Wales. The review chair, former Conservative Justice Minister David Gauke, said that ‘by next spring’ the review ‘should have the answer’ to the crisis of overcrowding in #prison.” Offenders given a community sentence including mental health treatment’ were significantly less likely to reoffend. One possible outcome of the review is the potential for Judges to pass a sentence of house arrest with electronic monitoring and a focus on #rehabilitation. This ‘house arrest’ could even be aided by technology, such as smart watches, ‘nudging’ offenders to ensure attendance at mental health and probation appointments. Speaking on the functionality of such a sentence Shabana Mahmood, the justice secretary, said that the review would have to ‘look at mechanisms’ to monitor offenders with such a sentence and that it ‘still has to be a #punishment’.  Many US states already employ a similar system of sentencing, in particular Texas where the prison population has dropped by 15% since the introduction of the scheme in 2007 and reoffending is down by 30%." We would love to know your thoughts on this, is this a positive way forward or not? Why, why not? https://lnkd.in/e5EnWiN6

  • "Profit should never come before people or planet". This is a value that Myrtos holds, and will continue to keep at the forefront of what we do. We love to learn more about how we, as a #business, can be more #sustainable. It was great to be at the premier of the film 'Responsible', which showcases some of the work that various businesses are doing to help #people and the #planet. From reducing child labour, to reducing carbon emissions, there is still so much to be done. Thank you to Welcome to the Jungle UK for putting it together, to Watershed for hosting, to Popcorn Kitchen - B Corp 🍿 for the delicious popcorn, and to Andy Hawkins for organising it all. Myrtos now has more respect for, and desire to eat, Tony's Chocolonely chocolate because of their hard work and commitment to try and eliminate child labour in the production of their chocolate. How can you make your business more sustainable?

  • At Myrtos consultancy we love showcasing other organisations work. Sixty-One is a #Bristol based charity that supports men and women who have a #criminal record, most who have been in prison, to make #positive changes to their lives. They are Treefest's partner #charity this year. Here are a few photos of their stand. If you're in Bristol, come on down to St Mary Redcliffe church before 4pm on Sunday and say hi. You'll also get to see lots of other great charities and hear some wonderful music.

Commercial Director @ Hatch Digital | Women-in-Tech & DEI Champion | Innovating Prison Education & Post-Prison Employment in Tech

I have no idea how to summarise today, but I’m so grateful to the many, many people out there who have followed and supported this journey, that I’m determined to find the words. Primarily, we’ve proven conclusively that there are men & women in prison all across the country who have everything it takes to carve out a meaningful career in the tech industry. Whilst I impatiently await the data from our assessments to back this up (as I’m conscious until we have that, it’s only proven conclusively amongst the Hatch Digital team), I’ve done this for long enough now to know what I saw. In a sample size of just shy of 20 men today, we found passion, ambition, grit, determination, transferable skill, technical proficiency & valuable life experience. In some cases, unmatched by candidates we’ve found elsewhere. We were insistent to our cohorts today that this wasn’t the type of assessment you could pass or fail, and I’m proud to maintain that narrative for any sceptics out there. It isn’t, and it never will be. That’s simply not the point. These men turned up, gave it their all, and from the feedback we recieved in the room, mostly genuinely enjoyed the process. They showed us their individuality, their unique ways of thinking, and above all, their drive to open the door to a better next chapter for themselves after prison. And whilst the next phase of our process won’t be a catch-all for the full group, my God I wish there were more and more programmes coming in behind us that could be. And with incredible teams like the one at Brixton today, I know that progress is being fought for, but they can’t be expected to do it alone. Employers, this is my heartfelt message to you. You’re missing out on fantastic talent, and the ball is as much in your court as anyone else’s. It won’t all be roses, but when is it? If these guys can show up with grit and determination like they did for us today, we owe it to them to show up with the same energy or the system can’t move forward. I am excited and humbled in equal measure by our experiences today as a team, and my diary is always open to anyone who is interested in learning more about this. #prisonreform #diversityintech (I have chosen not to tag the enormous army of people that came together to make today happen, because these views are my own and not theirs, but they know who they are and I’m eternally grateful to work with them 🙏)

  • https://lnkd.in/eavQhCNS Myrtos is thrilled to see this project becoming a reality. Providing opportunities for people who have been in #prison to enhance their skills and secure #employment is profoundly impactful. It not only boosts their self-esteem, self-worth, and sense of #purpose but also significantly reduces the likelihood of re-offending. This initiative will also allow the #community to engage with those who have been in prison and recognise their humanity. Well done to The Restore Trust for their dedication, and for partnering with exceptional businesses to make this possible. I can’t wait to enjoy a coffee there once it’s open. What kind of support and advice does your business or organisation need to knowingly hire people who have been in prison? www.myrtosconsultancy.com
