    It's often what's left 'unsaid' that is important when moving to work abroad 💼 🌍 It's the expectations! 💭 Psychologists and HR professionals refer to this as a "psychological contract" and it has a big impact on how likely expat assignments will... Succeed or fail. Thanks to Heather De Cruz-Cornaire, MSc, BSc (Hons) for sharing her recent research into this area! 3 lessons for our leaders, HR professionals and global mobility experts: 👉 Establish what are the expectations of the expat professional throughout the assignment. 👉 Leverage external consultants to help mitigate against these unkept expectations that break the psychological contracts e.g. the role is not exactly how it was painted out during the initial conversations with HR. 👉 Demonstrate explicitly your own expectations of the individual, so the organisation does not feel that the individual is not performing as well as you'd expect.     How to lose 9 Trillion Dollars? 💰 Recent research by Gallup reveals the answer. 9% of global GDP is lost to disengaged employees according to their recent survey 👎 👉 41% of workers in the survey felt stress 👉 Lonliness was often felt by remote and younger workers 👉 Best-practice organisations had over 3/4's of their management engaged. Working as an organisational psychologist...I want to help make work better for people 💼 Helping promote levels of engagement at the top can create a 'trickle down' effect of creating more first-line employees to feel they have more meaningful work.     What is one way to help your global organisation perform better? 🔥 I recently helped a client with a specific problem. His business was split over 5 branches, each of which hired a number of different expats 🌍 The challenge with international teams is that... ...they bring a new level of complexity to aspects such as leadership, communication and teamwork. We conducted research into the culture of the organisation and identified that there were specific misunderstandings and misalignment. Through, best practice research in organisational psychology... We incorporated feedback from all the teams including the leadership.     I remember this day vividly 💭 This was my first day living and working in China 🌍 💼 I was picked up by the HR at my new company. I maintained a smile but inside I was very anxious 😰 Looking outside the taxi window, everything seemed so different. I hadn't known what to really expect. We arrived at a restaurant to get breakfast. "What would you like?" he asked. "I'm not sure, to be honest...I can't read the menu," I replied. After eating some mysterious food, I was dropped off at the hotel I would now be staying in for the next two weeks until I found an apartment to move into. I stayed in that room for the entire first day - jetlagged, nervous and wondering why I had ever thought this would be a good idea. More worrying, there was no time to settle in. I was due at work tomorrow. I had a fantastic 6 years living in Beijing. However, I often look back at this first day and wonder if there could have been more to help me settle 🤔 The experience taught me a lot...and now moving to work abroad has become easier.
