Deepening our understanding of our ocean and coastlines through ground-breaking research, collaboration and innovation.
About us
The National Oceanography Centre is an independent self-governing organisation - a charitable company limited by guarantee. The NOC is funded by UK Research and Innovation to work on National Capability programmes, and manages on its behalf, the National Marine Equipment Pool - Europe’s largest fleet of autonomous and robotic vehicles, and two state of the art research ships RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook. The NOC has two sites, Southampton and Liverpool, and employs around 650 staff. We are co-located at both sites with leading UK Universities, giving us a unique position in UK marine research.

We need your help! 🫵🪨 Marine rock samples collected from our ocean are an exceptional resource of immense scientific value and help us understand our ecosystem. However, there is currently no repository for rocks collected as part of UK-funded research. The Rock Store Working Group, which NOC are a part of, is inviting the UK's marine science community to complete a survey which will help define the future requirements for a samples facility. TAKE THE SURVEY HERE (closes 18th December 2024) ✅ https://lnkd.in/eKK4PYk9

Any marine tech start-ups out there? Check out this exciting opportunity with NOC Innovations! Find out more about #NOCIOceanCatalyst here ⏬
🌊 Propelling Innovation in Marine Technologies and Beyond 🌊 At NOC Innovations, our pre accelerator Ocean Catalyst programme – the UK’s only programme dedicated to ocean technology —is set to play a pivotal role in supporting very early-stage marine tech start-ups with an ecosystem that nurtures their growth and fosters collaboration among scientists, innovators, and industry leaders. Welcoming our first cohort in April 2025, Ocean Catalyst participants will be provided with skill-building workshops, mentoring, and have access to the National Oceanography Centre's state-of-the-art workspaces, laboratories, and testing facilities. In addition, participants who excel in the NOC pre accelerator Ocean Catalyst can access further opportunities by progressing to the University of Southampton Science Park’s wider Catalyst Business Acceleration Programme. This programme is delivered in an exciting partnership with NOC Innovations, University of Southampton Science Park, Health Innovation Wessex, and the School of Healthcare Enterprise and Innovation, University of Southampton and represents a shared commitment to advancing marine science, technology and innovation. 🔬 To find out more about the programme and how it can benefit you, please visit our website and check out our brochure 📖👉 https://lnkd.in/eE2NZwcr #NOCIOceanCatalyst

A new study of the Madagascar Bloom has revealed that increasing drought events in southern Africa could benefit Indian Ocean marine life and atmospheric carbon removal. ⏫ Co-authored by scientists at NOC and led by the University of Athens, linked the unprecedented marine algal bloom to an influx of nutrient-containing dust blown over the Indian Ocean from South Africa. Thank you to everyone who attended the 'Unfolding Our Shared Future: Ocean health and ocean science - how can effective partnerships support the future of our oceans?', hosted by us last week in collaboration with Political Studies Association (UK): American Politics Group and Embassy of the United States of America, London. 💬 A special thanks goes out to our speakers - NOC's Professor Penny Holliday, Professor Jon Copley from University of Southampton and Dr Steven Thur from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration for their fantastic contributions on the night. 👥 It was also great to welcome guests from Hampshire County Council, Southampton City Council, Portsmouth City Council, University of Southampton, Solent University, Cantell School, and Southampton’s Children’s Mayor, Freya Orendecki. The conversation and the subsequent Q&A highlighted the important role collaboration plays in science and in supporting our oceans. If you would like to watch the recording of the event, this will be available shortly on this website ➡️ https://brnw.ch/21wOXvh
