We’ve partnered with the LGA to issue a reminder about home fire safety this festive season. Christmas can be a busy time for fire and rescue services. The number of fire hazards in the home can dramatically increase as people celebrate and exchange gifts, due to festive lights and decorations, candles and open flames, as well as potentially faulty products such as toys or chargers and devices. Home Office statistics show that you are 10% more likely to have an accidental dwelling fire in December than you are in the average month of the year, and that you are 53% more likely to have a fire on Christmas Day than you are on the average day. We want people to remember the festive celebrations for the right reasons. That’s why we are urging people to give the Online Home Fire Safety Check (HFSC) a visit. A few minutes completing an Online Home Fire Safety Check and being alert to the risks in your home or the home of your loved ones can help you have a peaceful and safe Christmas, and can help FRSs to manage risk. The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) is urging the UK Government to make road safety a priority by developing a national road safety strategy for England. With over 31,000 road traffic collisions attended by fire and rescue services in 2023, the need for action has never been more evident. A road safety strategy would set evidence-based targets to reduce deaths and serious injuries, ensuring a focused and coordinated approach to tackling one of the UK’s most pressing public health challenges. NFCC’s Road Safety and Road Rescue Lead, Chief Fire Officer Dan Quin, emphasises: "Road safety is a public health priority that requires bold action and coordinated efforts. Fire and rescue services already play a crucial role in keeping people safe on the roads, but we need the Government to consider whether our statutory duties should more accurately reflect the full breadth of the work we do and look to support this with adequate funding. Without this our ability to prevent harm is limited." Learn more about NFCC’s vision for safer roads: https://lnkd.in/eGPnYXQ6

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) is calling for urgent action to reduce road traffic collisions and fatalities across the UK. Last year, fire and rescue services (FRSs) responded to over 31,000 road traffic collisions—a stark reminder of the critical role they play in road safety. To enhance prevention efforts, NFCC is urging: 👉 UK and devolved governments to consult on expanding FRS statutory duties to reflect their prevention work, supported by sustained funding 👉 Development of a new national road safety strategy for England, mirroring Scotland’s approach, with evidence-based targets to reduce deaths and serious injuries 👉 Consistent standards for Road Safety Partnerships to drive best practice 👉 Introduction of graduated driver licensing to protect young and novice drivers 👉 Road safety themes to be embedded into school curriculums "Road safety is a public health priority requiring bold action and coordination," says Dan Quin, NFCC’s Road Safety and Road Rescue Lead. The severe weather and flooding caused by #StormBert have brought devastation to many communities. Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones and those whose homes and businesses have been damaged. NFCC Chair Mark Hardingham has expressed his gratitude to the firefighters, control room staff, and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to protect lives and support communities during the storm. We have also reiterated our calls for the Government to consult on introducing a statutory duty for fire and rescue services in England, ensuring they have the tools, training, and resources needed to respond to increasingly frequent extreme weather events. With more rain on the way, read our full statement and find flood safety advice here: https://lnkd.in/eTa7TXRP

Professionalism and partnership working celebrated at NFCC’s Prevention Awards 2024 Fire and rescue (FRS) Prevention teams from across the UK were recognised at NFCC’s Celebrating Prevention Awards 2024 last week. More than 70 nominations were received by the judging panel recognising the incredible work FRSs are undertaking across road, home and water safety, as well as safeguarding, children & young people and partnership working. All the nominations demonstrated some fantastic Prevention practice from FRSs across the country, and the excellence of nominations made the decisions by the judging panels hard work with a great deal of discussion. Particularly poignant this year was the introduction of The Donna Crossman Children & Young People Award building on the legacy of Donna changing the lives of so many young people, and to ensure that her memory is continued to be honoured and remembered by all in the sector. With the cold weather due, appliances, such as boilers, gas fires, chimneys and flues should be serviced by a registered engineer, and an alarm should be fitted in the same room as the appliance. #CarbonMonoxideAwarenessWeek
