Did you see the beautiful Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve (NNR) on Countryfile on Sunday? 📺 This nature haven in Northumbria is an important place for birds such as the light-bellied brent goose. Thousands of these geese flock here every autumn. They come for the reserve's mudflats which provide safe roosting spots close to their feeding grounds. Little egrets, redshank and curlews also put their best beak forward for the cameras. To learn more about how important this NNR is for wildlife, watch the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/e4ZWfbex 📷: Light-bellied brent geese, Lindisfarne. Happy 30th Birthday to the National Lottery Heritage Fund! Today marks 30 years of the Heritage Fund supporting projects that aim to protect and restore nature. Here are just some of the Natural England nature projects that couldn't have happened without their funding: 🦎Back from the Brink🦎 Over £4.8 million to save some of Britain's most threatened species. From the Black-tailed godwit to Natterjack toads, 83 species conservation status' were improved thanks to the close collaboration with over 100 conservation organisations. 🦇Bats in Churches🦇 This five year partnership worked to mitigate the damage cause by bats roosting over England's precious church buildings. This included covering up artefacts and installing purpose-built shelves to collect bat droppings. Bats became better understood by local communities, and conflicts between humans and wildlife were transformed. 🏞️Revitalising Redesdale, Northumberland🏞️ We received £1.8 million to help conserve Redesdale’s rich ecology and culture. This includes restoring peatlands and grasslands, and creating new walking trails for people to enjoy. It is clear that by coming together, we can make a huge difference for nature. We are thankful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for recognising this and working with us to help England's wildlife thrive. We’ve just appointed 46 new Wildlife Inspectors – the first since 2008! 😮 There aren't many jobs that combine tackling crime with protecting species like dormice and otters, but Natural England’s Wildlife Inspectors are empowered to do just that. Authorised under Section 18A of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, they will use additional legislative powers to investigate wildlife crime and breaches of protected species permits and licences. Species licensing is a key tool for nature recovery. Read our latest blog by Wildlife Inspector, Samantha Roberts, to find out more about their work. ⬇️ #WildlifeCrime #Dormice #Otter #ProectedSpecies #WildlifeInspector

How are we using tech like Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help protect marine mammals? 🐬 Better evidence means better strategies to help manage and protect England's magnificent marine mammals. We're improving our evidence base for species such as seals, dolphins and porpoise by using: 🦭 AI to analyse ariel and drone imagery of seal colonies to identify and count adults and pups 🎤 underwater microphones to record the clicks which dolphins and porpoises use to identify each other and their prey. This tells us where these mammals are most active and what their feeding patterns are 🐬 environmental DNA (eDNA) testing to see which mammals have recently passed through particular spots either out at sea or along the coast This work is being undertaken as part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs-funded marine Natural Capital Ecosystem Assessment Programme (mNCEA). This is a major driver of new research to monitor the marine environment and improve decision making. How is Biodiversity Net Gain helping to drive a positive impact across the world? 🌍 Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a concept that promotes leaving the natural environment in a better state than before development. In our latest blog, nick white, Principal Adviser on BNG, and Steve Panks, Principal Specialist BNG and Biodiversity Metrics, at Natural England, highlight how the biodiversity metric is helping biodiversity gains in countries as diverse as the USA, Saudia Arabia, Sweden and India. Learn how this adaptable metric is supporting measurable conservation outcomes worldwide, helping to shape biodiversity policy and foster international collaboration for a more sustainable future. Thank you to our contributors: Camilla Söderquist, City Planner, Uppsala Municipality, Vikki Patton, Senior Managing Consultant at Ramboll and Scott Cole, Environmental Senior Consultant at WSP. The first ever Local Nature Recovery Strategy in England has landed.🌳 Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRSs) are locally led, evidence-based strategies that will help identify where we should focus our efforts to restore nature. Today West of England Combined Authority has launched the first of 48 LNRSs that will be rolled out across England - the West of England LNRS. The West of England is already home to some wonderful places for wildlife from the rolling hills of the Mendips to the banks of the Severn Estuary. This strategy will determine where we can grow nature for national health, wealth and security through co-operative action between farmers, NGOs, communities and businesses. Natural England is delighted to be working with Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Environment Agency and Forestry Commission to support and advise responsible authorities preparing each LNRS up and down the country.
