To mark #EmpDay24 today (Friday), we’re sharing some of the inspiring stories from North of Tyne residents who recently found work through our New Start employment programme. The theme of #EmpDay24 is Employment Support for Every Citizen. Thanks to the support of North East Combined Authority and partners Bernicia, Karbon Homes, North Tyneside Council and Housing Employment Network North East, New Start has been able to support people in the North of Tyne area to overcome the challenges facing our labour market. Building a better future 🖤 We’ve approved a planning application to build 45 bungalows in the west end of the city on a site described as an eye-sore. Our Planning Committee passed the plans for new homes on the old Parkway School site in Chapel Park. The development, which will be mixed tenure, will bring high-quality, environmentally sustainable new homes to the area. Aimed at elderly residents, it is a great example of how we’re supporting developers to deliver on the needs of our community. We know we need more homes so this is great to see 🙌

Fighting for the future of our residents 🙏 We are one of England’s biggest council landlords with more than 25,000 homes and we know council homes transform lives. There is lots of work and investment in housing following the transfer of services into the council from Your Homes Newcastle in July. Publication of the Grenfell Report today underline the importance of ensuring residents have access to safe and comfortable housing. As we remember those 72 victims who lost their lives we once again call on the Government to increase funding to secure the future of council housing. Our leader Cllr Nick Kemp and Cabinet Member for a Living City, Cllr Paula Maines, joined more than 100 councils yesterday to back a new report on the future of council housing. We were one of the driving forces behind this report, led by Southwark Council, which has set out five solutions: 👉 Establish a new fair and sustainable Housing Revenue Account Model 👉 Put the plug back in- Reform unsustainable Right to Buy policies 👉 Remove red tape on the Affordable Homes Programme and other funds 👉 Ensure existing council homes are good quality 👉 Deliver new and replacement council homes It’s not just investment in property, it’s investment in services and investment in the communities that make a house a home 🖤
