About us
NHS Orkney is the smallest health board in Scotland, with a budget of some 55.6 million. With its headquarters in Kirkwall, NHS Orkney is responsible for providing a comprehensive health service for the island communities. NHS Orkney employs around 750 staff. The Balfour has 49 beds. Currently NHS Orkney, as part of its service redesign process, is looking to ensure that the use of these beds supports the needs of the local population. Lying off the north-east coast of Scotland, between John O'Groats and the Shetland Isles, Orkney is a group of 70 islands and skerries, 17 of these are inhabited. Houses and farms are dotted all over the gently rolling landscape and the sea is never more than a few miles away. The Gulf Stream passes close by giving Orkney a surprisingly temperate climate. Frost and snow are rare, but it is very windy with the landscape dominated by the panoramic skies. There are often dramatic changes in the weather and it is said that you can experience all four seasons in the course of a few hours. The days are short and dark in winter, but in the summer it is possible to read a newspaper or play a round of golf at midnight in the long, light nights of June and July. Although Orkney is geography isolated, the islands are well served by several transport links to Scotland. Orkney is a wonderful place to live and work and offers low pollution, low crime, excellent schools, good leisure facilities, unique wildlife and amazing scenery. Imagine living and working in a place where modernity and history come together in an exhilarating mix. Orkney is just this place. But dont take our word for it - come and see for yourself! Please feel free to visit the island and the Balfour Hospital where you will find a very warm welcome.

NHS Orkney secures two National Awards Last week, the prestigious Scotland Health Awards were held in Edinburgh at a dazzling awards ceremony to celebrate the outstanding work and commitment colleagues across the Health and Social Care network show to our patients and communities across Scotland. We firstly want to recognise our three finalists, Anne Gregg, Macmillan Specialist Nurse and Amanda Manson, Cardiology Specialist Nurse, who were both nominated for Nurse of the Year Award and Melissa Lindsay, Midwife and Sonographer, who was nominated for Midwife of the Year Award. We were so incredibly proud when we heard Melissa win Midwife of the Year and, Anne win Nurse of the Year! The Nurse Award is ‘for an individual nurse providing excellent NHS nursing care for people in Scotland. It recognises the high quality and compassionate NHS nursing care that an individual nurse has provided for people in Scotland.’ Well done Anne. And the Midwife Award is ‘for an individual midwife providing excellent care, evidenced-based NHS maternity services/care in Scotland, who is providing high quality compassionate care for women and babies in Scotland.’ What an achievement Melissa. Sam Thomas, Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery, AHP’s and Chief Officer Acute at NHS Orkney said: “I truly couldn’t be prouder of all three NHS Orkney finalists at this year’s awards. When I heard both the Nurse of the Year and the Midwife of the Year awarded I was genuinely delighted. I’d like to once again congratulate Amanda, Anne and Melissa, you’ve done yourselves and NHS Orkney proud. Finally, I wish to extend my congratulations to all finalists across all the categories and the very worthy winners.”

Return to Practice Programme – Nursing NHS Orkney is encouraging anyone who has let their nursing registration lapse and interested in returning to practice to attend an upcoming meeting about what’s available. The return to practice programme for nurses involves a short course to prepare for re-joining the NMC register and enables nurses to return to their field of practice in a safe and confident manner. The course can be completed via a full or part-time route and hours are negotiated depending on length of lapse of registration. Funding is also available to undertake the programme. Georgie Green, Practice Educator at NHS Orkney said: “This is an excellent opportunity for qualified nurses to return to practice. If you still have a passion for nursing and would love to return we would love to support you. We have opportunities in varied roles so please join the virtual event or get in touch for more information.” If you’re interested and want to hear more, you can join the information session on Wednesday 13 November from 6pm – 8pm. The session will be held via MS Teams and the link for joining can be found here, https://lnkd.in/e4Y-bYct If you want to speak to Georgie about the programme or the information session itself, you can contact her by emailing ork.practiceeducation@nhs.scot.
