Harry’s mum Vicki thanked the staff who cared for them throughout Harry’s treatment. ‘We are incredibly grateful for the care we received, from the amazing team on ward 3B to the wonderful staff in A&E.’ Congratulations Harry, and brilliant work team! • You can earn, learn and make a difference with an NHS apprenticeship. ‘My NHS career started with a senior healthcare support worker apprenticeship. The 18-month training has been the foundation for me being able to go on to train as a nursing associate.' Beth now works with people with dementia in inpatient mental health services at Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust. Here she has been able to learn through on-the-job training as an apprentice to kick start her career. ‘I feel very lucky to be able to do the work I do. • Even a few minutes of exercise each day leading up to your surgery can make a real difference. Stay active—climb stairs, take short walks, or exercise with family.’ Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust teamed up with Joe Wicks (The Body Coach) to create two 10-minute exercise videos for people waiting for surgery. Increased activity before surgery, known as prehabilitation, reduces complications such as infections and heart problems, promoting faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. Daphne, 82, waiting for back surgery, said: ‘Keeping fit is very important to me. My job is very demanding, so I stay active by walking across London to my job, doing yoga and other exercises. I would encourage everyone, no matter their age, to try these short exercises to keep fit and prepare them for surgery.’ The routines, available on the Bodycoach YouTube channel, are designed for older adults and include low-impact and chair-based exercises like side kicks and squats. By improving fitness ahead of surgery, patients can recover quicker and get back to their lives sooner. You can watch the 10 minute chair-based workout here: https://lnkd.in/eWGjMx5V

  • ‘I feel deeply honoured and overwhelmed by this recognition’ said Matty Asante-Owusu, Sickle Cell Community Matron at Whittington Health. Recently, Matty has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Years Honours List for her dedication to caring for sickle cell patients. Sickle cell disease is a serious lifelong health condition which causes painful episodes called ‘crises’. It is caused by unusually shaped red blood cells and is most common in people with an African or Caribbean family background. As the first Sickle Cell Community Matron, Matty provides personalised care to patients at home. She has created initiatives to help connect sickle cell patients, including monthly dinners for older men with red cell disorders. Matty also set up a Patient Users Group, where patients hear from experts about the latest research and advancements in sickle cell. ‘My motivation has always been my patients. There’s a real emotional side to my work, but what drives me is the opportunity to make a difference in their lives.’ Congratulations Matty; thank you for your dedication and service in the NHS for 36 years! 💙 Inspired by Matty?
