Many congratulations to consultant cardiologist Dr Michael Kuehl and our Innovation Team who have won a £230,000 award from the British Heart Foundation to develop an app that could improve the care of hundreds of thousands of heart failure patients. Dr Kuehl and the team will be using the funding to develop an innovative tool to help healthcare professionals make informed medication decisions for their patients. Their vision is to turn the tool into a user-friendly smartphone app, named 'Apptitrator,' which will empower patients to manage their symptoms and receive better personalised care. Their project was one of only four in the UK to win funding totalling £900,000 as part of BHF's annual Healthcare Innovation Awards. https://lnkd.in/d_qgycN7

A huge congratulations the final winner from January's Making a Difference Award nominations, Kelly Blakeman 💙 Patient Flow Team Leader, Kelly was nominated thanks to the outstanding compassion she showed to a patient (who had lost his sight) and his family in their time of need. A snippet of the nomination read: "Kelly advocated for a patient and his mum at every step of his three month hospital admission. "She was his voice when he was at his lowest, she listened to his concerns and ensured all staff were aware of his circumstances so they could introduce themselves when walking into the room. "I am extremely proud of Kelly and all she has done to support this patient and his mum under such challenging circumstances." Professor for Nursing Practice, Liz Deutsch, recently took to the stage at Coventry Cathedral to deliver her inaugural lecture✨ Reflecting on 34 years of practice, Liz brought her audience on a journey which told her story of ‘breaking the mould’ from her childhood spent in foster care through to her professional and academic career. This couldn't have been a more fitting theme for Liz, who was the first in her extensive foster family to go to university, as well as the first Consultant Nurse in Birmingham. Liz talked through her role within the Centre for Care Excellence, which began in 2021, following 20 years as a Consultant Nurse in Acute Medicine. In this clinical academic role, she has come to focus on three programmes of research; patient perpetrated violence against staff; patient discharge from hospital (criteria-led) and Professional Nurse Advocates in England. 💬Reflecting on her experience, Liz said: "In my preparations for the lecture I realised I have never afforded myself the time to look back over my achievements. There were so many things I had forgotten, but I will never forget the sliding doors moment that ignited my research interests and become my inspiration to embed evidence throughout my clinical career. "My practice of proactively seeking out the evidence requires a systematic effort in translating this into practical applications to continuously improve patient care. "Just as the hour of my inaugural lecture flew by for those in the audience, my 34 years to date has flown by. What a fabulous opportunity the NHS offers nurses who would like clinical academic careers." Liz dedicated her lecture to her foster Dad Alan Edward Parsons who passed away in 2020.
