Championing Regional Contractors
About us
The Northern Counties Builders Federation (NCBF) is a long-established trade association bringing together construction companies and contractors operating in the North East of England. We describe ourselves as ‘the champion of regional contractors’ because we are committed to supporting the many talented construction industry SME's in this region and are keen to play an increasingly strategic role in their success and development. We are proactive in raising the profile of our regional members, supporting training and apprenticeships with access to grants and funding and helping to future-proof the North East construction industry alongside our network of linked organisations.

Ditch the pointless degrees and grab a construction apprenticeship - before it’s too late! That’s my advice to young people who want a high-paying career that AI can’t make redundant. University definitely has its place, but far too many teenagers drift into useless courses, only to graduate with massive debts and a low paid job. All that’s happening when there’s a colossal, irreversible jobs boom in UK construction - offering big salaries and super-fast career progression. It’s time we stopped misleading our young people and started championing construction as a brilliant career path that boosts both their futures and our economy. I’m on a mission to make that happen. What do you think? It was a privilege to visit Darlington College for the Northern Counties Builders Federation (NCBF) event - they showed just how exciting the opportunities in construction are! Today we held our Building Your Future event at Darlington College. The aim of the campaign is to connect employers in the North East construction sector with trade students preparing to enter the workforce. It is part of a wider campaign that seeks to bridge the skills gap in the region’s construction industry. With over 250,000 new construction workers needed nationally by 2028, NCBF’s ‘Building Your Future’ campaign is a key initiative designed to directly address the shortage. The day commenced with a welcome from Angela Carney, president of Northern Counties Builders Federation (NCBF) and Luke Gate, head of construction at Darlington College. This was followed by Chris Morris, junior vice president of Northern Counties Builders Federation (NCBF) and company secretary at Compass Developments (NE) Ltd, who discussed the crucial role apprentices play at his firm. Employers then had the chance to tour the carpentry & joinery, electrical, bricklaying and plumbing workshops and meet the apprentices. Thank you to politician, Andy Preston for his support and to the many employers who attended this morning's event. True North Construction recently invited Catriona Lingwood, Angela Carney and Sarah O'Mahoney MCIM on a site tour to view a Passivhaus project, located in Tynemouth, which showcases outstanding sustainability and design. Built for a local entrepreneurial family of four, the house blends seamlessly into the area’s charm, while offering state-of-the-art, eco-friendly features – three bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen/living area, boot room, library, snug, office, utility room and balcony terrace. The entire timber frame had to be stick-built on site, which was an impressive achievement. The challenging site conditions, including narrow access points, required careful planning and precise execution. Despite these obstacles, the True North team efficiently constructed the frame, demonstrating remarkable skill and adaptability in overcoming the logistical challenges. The house boasts the following: 💡 Sustainability: The home incorporates an air source heat pump, PV panels, and a green sedum roof, maximizing energy efficiency and minimising its environmental impact. The installation of a Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system ensures constant fresh air, enhancing indoor comfort while conserving energy. With an AH reading of 0.4 this certifies its label as certified Passivhaus. 🌊 Location, views & design: Situated on a 1/4-acre plot previously occupied by two houses, the new home takes full advantage of its beautiful views overlooking the North Sea and Tynemouth Priory. The design not only complements Tynemouth’s unique character but also celebrates its coastal surroundings with an eco-friendly, modern structure. Located behind Lola jeans just off the high street, it is situated in a super prime location and very sought after area of the North East. 👨👩👧👦 Client-centric approach: Designed and built for a young, local (two streets away) entrepreneurial couple with two children, the project’s emphasis on both aesthetics and function perfectly caters to the family's values of sustainability. 🔦 We love to shine the spotlight on our loyal members 🔦 This month we speak to Gary Brannighan, business development manager at Hodgson Sayers Ltd, who explores a range of topics and one of them is the skills gap. "Education and investment in technology are key. I don’t think the younger generation fully realises how much the construction sector has evolved and that’s a big part of our challenge. The old stereotype of construction being cold, dirty and low-skilled, just isn’t true anymore. We must champion and push for a modern and dynamic image to attract talent." https://lnkd.in/eNGy_UBG Angela Carney Tony Kay Neil Ramsey Ken Parkin Matthew McCarrick Chris Morris Catriona Lingwood Stuart Miller Bradley O'Mahoney
