A P P R E N T I C E S Shaun and Morgan are both in their fourth and final year of their apprenticeships with NLB. They combine study at Forth Valley College with practical on the job training out on site. Shaun, Electrical Engineering Apprentice “The highlight for me has been an offshore trip to Chicken Rock Lighthouse where I was tasked along with others to install a new auxiliary battery bank. This was a standout for me as the logistics of this task were very different from anything I had been involved with before.” Morgan, Mechanical Engineering Apprentice “My highlight of the apprenticeship has been the opportunity to travel around Scotland learning about the functions of lighthouses. “I’m currently on a 3 month placement at GONDAN Shipbuilders - Astilleros Gondán in Spain where our new vessel is being built. V A C A N C Y *Coastal Inspector* We're recruiting for a Coastal Inspector to join our fantastic Navigation team. The role is based at our HQ in Edinburgh but will involve frequent inspection visits to harbours and fish farms around Scotland's coasts. You will make sure that all marine activities and developments in Scottish waters are marked to a standard which ensures safety for mariners. Occasionally you will need to spend time at sea on an NLB ship. This is a unique role that would suit someone with a background and qualification in Marine Navigation. You should be educated to HND level or similar and have experience with electronic charts/GIS. Closing date 14 February. Major Milestone Reached as Northern Lighthouse Board New Vessel Enters Water For the First Time. Our new vessel POLE STAR, currently under construction at GONDAN Shipbuilders - Astilleros Gondán Castropol, Asturias Spain, was launched today, 14 January 2025. The vessel successfully left the slipway and entered the Ria del Eo before being towed to a berth at the shipyard. Phil Day, Director of Operations with the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) said: “This is a momentous occasion for the shipyard and for NLB. To see the vessel successfully launch into the water is a major milestone and means we are well on our way to taking delivery of a new state-of-the-art hybrid powered ship to support our vital safety service to mariners.” The ship will now require around nine months of fitting out work before it is ready for delivery.
