Our council leader has called for a fairer funding deal after our financial plans for the coming year were approved today. It includes a 4.99% increase in our share of council tax after we were hit with an unexpected £22m funding shortfall. Cllr Carl Les said: “We are acutely aware of the financial pressures which households are facing across the county, mirroring the situation nationally. “But we have to ensure that we can balance the budget, which has been one of the toughest yet due to the funding deal we have been given by the Government. This settlement is based on a presumption of a 4.99 per cent increase in council tax. “If we had introduced a lower increase, this would have left an even greater shortfall in funding than the one we are facing, and this would have affected our ability to deliver the services that are so important for our communities and businesses.” See https://lnkd.in/ePntjkUJ

We provide #localgov services across North Yorkshire, England's largest rural county.
About us
North Yorkshire Council is responsible for delivering a wide range of local government services across England's largest rural county. We're responsible for education, social care, health, highways, libraries, trading standards and household waste recycling centres as well as hundreds of other services to a population of circa 600,000 residents. Our residents are represented by 72 elected members and the council is Conservative controlled. We are on a journey of change and modernisation over the next five years, changing the ways that we engage with the public and the ways that we work with communities in general. Whilst the challenges ahead are not to be under-estimated, there will be positive opportunities to be more efficient, to do many things better and smarter than we have before and ways of working that are better for our service areas. As we shape the organisation of the future, we will do so around core principles including: • Putting customers at the heart of all we do • Enabling stronger communities • Working in partnership • Ensuring value for money • Valuing and investing in staff • Being an innovative and learning organisation We've got over 20,000 members of staff who work in a wide range of roles and we are one of North Yorkshire's leading employers. A series of solar panels are being installed on the roof of Active North Yorkshire Selby in a move that is set to significantly reduce swimming pool energy costs. The project is expected to provide an estimated annual saving of more than £21,900 and contribute to carbon savings from the site. The upgrades, which will see 216 solar panels fitted, reinforces our continued ambition to work towards becoming net zero by 2030. Find out more at https://lnkd.in/eveW796X

Pupils at Masham Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School are being given the chance to improve their wellbeing while also enjoying activities with each other after their playground has been transformed. The outside play area for children in Reception and Year 1 has undergone a revamp replacing an “old and tired” area into a new and exciting space for the youngsters to enjoy. The makeover began just before Christmas last year and now boasts a large, surfaced space for the younger children of all abilities to have fun, explore, develop their physical strength and learn as part of the curriculum. The playground has also seen a wooden canopy introduced to provide shelter for outdoor learning in all weathers and encouraging imaginative play. Find out more at https://lnkd.in/eHnABzNm

We are delighted to announce the phased reopening of Active North Yorkshire Ripon: The Jack Laugher Centre starting today. Like much of Ripon, the centre sits above a layer of gypsum – a water-soluble rock that leads to the formation of large underground caves that can collapse, and the identification of the void resulted in the need for complex ground stabilisation works at the centre. A temporary cabin was erected in the site’s car park to house interim gym facilities while the ground stabilisation works were carried out. This will be removed later this month once the gym equipment has been relocated. The indoor gym will provide members with more usable space to continue their wellbeing journeys thanks to 36 stations for cardio and fixed resistance equipment, free weights and a reintroduced half rack in addition to an improved space for spin classes. A roofer who took money from customers for work he never carried out has been fined and ordered to pay compensation after an investigation by our trading standards team. Donovan Morley-Clough, also known as Donovan Morley, formerly of North Marine Drive, Scarborough, traded as DNIJ Home Improvements. He appeared at York Magistrates’ Court on 31 January after pleading guilty to two offences under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. The magistrates were told Morley-Clough is now unemployed and receiving Universal Credit. They said Morley-Clough must pay compensation of £1,550 as well as a fine and costs totalling £950.
