We're so proud of everyone who was part of making the NYJO First Time Jazz tour in London happen this term. We took live jazz to 1,900 young people across 13 London schools, for many, their first time ever hearing jazz and for some, their first live music experience of any kind! ✨ We’ve seen students sing, rap, play, and improvise with confidence. We’ve heard incredible stories of students deciding to take up instruments. And we’ve witnessed firsthand how representation in music inspires young people to believe they can be part of it too. The feedback from the students, our leaders Shantéh and Flo and our Emerging Professional musicians has been brilliant, and you can read all about it on our blog here: https://lnkd.in/eTmEgjbw Thank you to our Emerging Professional musicians, leaders, and schools for making this tour so special. Let’s keep bringing jazz to new audiences!

Reflecting on our inspiring 8-week project with Royal Greenwich Trust School last year! NYJO’s Emerging Professional musicians worked with the school’s first-ever Rock Band to explore improvisation, songwriting, and collaboration. By the end of the project, these talented young musicians were confidently performing their own compositions. This partnership has laid a strong foundation for the future of music at RGTS, and we’re excited to see where their journey takes them next! We are proud to partner with schools and funders nationally to expand access to music education. Reflecting on the success of our Widening Access pilot projects, NYJO is proud to have developed initiatives that provide young people with opportunities to engage with music, especially those facing barriers to access. Our first 2024 Widening Access pilot project at Challney High School for Boys in Luton aimed to inspire young people in a deprived ward where music hadn’t been a focal point. With no full-time music teacher and limited instrumental access, NYJO stepped in to offer an exciting new experience. After a performance by our ensemble, students worked with NYJO Educators, using NYJO tubas to explore bass lines, rhythms, and improvisation. 76% of participants expressed interest in learning an instrument after they had taken part in this project. In Summer 2023, NYJO Learning took its First Time Jazz schools tour to North Lincolnshire, performing in 5 mainstream schools and one SEN school. To follow up, we partnered with 4 of these schools to create a samba-inspired performance project, culminating in a local theatre show. The project aimed to ignite a love for music and develop young musicians' skills. Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with a significant increase in enjoyment of making music together, raising the average score from 6.9 to 8.6! These pilots are key in creating pathways for young people to discover music, ensuring that no one is left behind!
