🚨 CO2 from proposed North Sea oil and gas sites would equal 30 years of UK household emissions, new research reveals. 🤯 Approving these projects locks us into climate catastrophe. Time to fairly transition to a renewable future, for our ocean and planet 🌊🌍 Read more on The Guardian: https://lnkd.in/efXceYwG #OceanConservation #FossilFuels #Renewables #BigOil #Ocean

🦋 🐠 🐙🐌 Natural History Museum scientists discovered almost 200 new species in 2024! Among those were deep-sea amphipods, whose habitat is threatened by industrial mining plans. ⛏️ 🪸 The discovery is part of wider efforts to understand the deep-sea, which can then inform where marine protected areas should go. Because protecting our #ocean starts with understanding it. 🌊 #DefendTheDeep #NaturalHistoryMuseum #Conservation #DeepSea https://lnkd.in/eVcGkfn9

Amazing! Nudibranchs, humpback whales and spiny lobsters are thriving in UK seas. 🐋🦞 Our friends at the Wildlife Trusts have conducted their annual marine review, and the findings are striking. Species comebacks have been revealed, including 30 sightings of humpback whales off Cornwall and the return of the long-lost St Piran’s hermit crab, thought to be wiped out by an oil spill decades ago. Thriving restoration projects have led to recordings of giant mussel beds, more lobsters, a tope shark and European eels - showing that when an area is properly protected, ocean wildlife can truly recover. 🌊 But threats remain. To ensure ocean health, we must kick Big Oil and bottom trawlers out of all marine protected areas. 🚨 BREAKING: Only 44% of key species and habitats within UK marine protected areas are in favourable condition. Not good enough! It's time to get a move on and properly protect ocean havens if we're to have any hope of reaching the 70% target by 2042. We can start by kicking dirty Big Oil and bottom trawlers out of protected waters.
