Making communications work for everyone

About us

Ofcom is the UK's communications regulator. We make sure people get the best from their home phone and mobile services, as well as keeping an eye on TV, radio and on-demand content. We also ensure people don’t get scammed and are protected from bad practice. We also oversee the universal postal service, and the airwaves used by wireless devices. Right now, technology is changing how people work, interact and enjoy themselves. Much of our work is focused on making sure everybody has access to the communications technology they need and that competition can thrive.

Our ban on mid-contract price rises linked to inflation for telecoms services comes into force from today. UK phone, broadband and pay TV companies will no longer be able to link any mid-contract price rises to inflation - which can be volatile and uncertain. Under new Ofcom rules, customers will have to be told in pounds and pence any price rise written in a contract at the point of sale. Natalie Black CBE, Ofcom’s Group Director for Networks and Communications, said: “More than ever, households want and need to plan their budgets. Our new rules mean there will be no nasty surprises, and customers will know how much they will be paying and when, through clear labelling.” Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/efkv_ymZ

🔞 Robust age checks are a cornerstone of the Online Safety Act. Our new industry guidance sets out how we expect services to introduce highly effective age assurance to protect children from encountering online porn. The Online Safety Act divides online services into different categories with distinct routes to implement age checks. But the action we expect all of them to take starts from today. To help ensure compliance, we will contact a range of adult services to advise them of their new obligations and will not hesitate to act if services do not engage or ultimately comply. ➡️ Swipe to find out more, and read our announcement in full here: https://lnkd.in/ebDxXdhg

Our recent Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Broadcasting report highlights that almost half of the UK's broadcaster employees are now based outside London. But it also reveals that progress in other important areas has stalled. A diverse and representative workforce is vital for a sustainable broadcasting industry. Predators who create sexually explicit ‘deepfakes’- images or videos digitally altered to appear real - could face criminal prosecution as the Government bears down on vile online abuse as part of its mission to make our streets safer. The proliferation of these hyper-realistic images has grown at an alarming rate, causing devastating harm to victims, particularly women and girls who are often the target. We will address this by introducing new provisions to tackle creating sexually explicit 'deepfakes' without consent. There will also be new offences for taking intimate images without consent, and for installing equipment with the intent of taking such images. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAmHxteN
