The Cunliffe review is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help to rebuild public trust. We all want to see companies delivering improved service for customers and better environmental outcomes.      Through our latest price review, we've allowed record levels of investment, backed by stretching targets to turn around company performance.      But there is much more to do, especially to tackle pollution from storm overflows, improve river health and customer service.  Regulation needs to be modernised, streamlined and clarified to deliver more effective oversight and enable us to drive change in the water sector.      You can learn more about the Independent Commission for Water and how to take part in the review: https://lnkd.in/eErv5ZbP

    Chief Executive at Ofwat

Yesterday, we brought the water sector together to discuss how the industry can better serve customers and better protect the environment.   The title of our event was 'Turning the Tide' – and the interest among the attendees I heard from was evidence of the importance that the sector is placing in making this transformation to meet the challenges it faces.   If the sector is to change, then Ofwat needs to change too.   We need to be more proactive in the way we regulate, and collaborate more effectively with partner regulators.   Yesterday was about getting stakeholders' input to inform our work for the next 12 months, to help to shape and deliver our vision for a secure and sustainable water sector.   And change is needed in the industry.   Some of the ingredients for transformation are already in place, such as the fourfold increase investment announced in the 2024 price review. But there is still much to do to deliver on the promise of new investment – this is a challenge for all of us in that room.   The opportunity is huge, and the ambition is there.   We're engaging constructively with the Cunliffe Review, and we will continue to closely engage with the organisations who joined us, to drive forward the improvements I know we can make to provide the service that customers and the environment deserve.

The Water (Special Measures) Act gives us new powers to set requirements for water companies over executive remuneration and governance. These rules are an important step towards rebuilding public trust in the sector and driving a change in companies' culture that better meets the expectations of their customers and wider stakeholders. We welcome today's Royal Assent of the Water (Special Measures) Act 2025, which provides a clear signal to create a water sector that delivers for all customers and the environment.  This Act gives Ofwat new powers to enforce requirements for companies on remuneration and governance, including prohibiting performance related executive pay. These rules are an important step towards rebuilding public trust within the water sector, while also prompting water companies to focus on delivering a change in their culture that better meets the expectations of their customers. We are working at pace to implement these new rules and intend to launch consultations on the final proposals later this year. https://lnkd.in/eXwcEh33
