  • WHAT IS HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE? 🤔 Hydrostatic pressure is the force exerted by water when it builds up around your property, especially below ground level. The deeper the water, the greater the pressure, which can push moisture through walls or floors. That’s why proper waterproofing, like tanking or cavity drainage systems, is crucial to keeping basements and foundations dry, especially here in the UK. #WaterProofing #DampProofing #Surveys #BuildingSurveys #Construction #Manchester

  • If you are having a property built from scratch then it is always important to ensure that you have the full picture about your waterproofing requirements. There are a couple of different ways in which water can penetrate a structure below ground level :- Where the ground is not saturated, it will move through the capillaries of the ground and structure by capillary suction. When this form of moisture comes to the internal surface of the building, surface dampness is evident but there will be no free flowing of water. Capillary moisture can enter a structure laterally such as when a wall is earth retaining. Ground Saturation When the ground is saturated and hydrostatic pressure occurs water will be pushed through these capillaries of the ground and structure thus bringing the water to the surface, the pressure behind it will force into the property in the form of liquid water and flooding will occur. Earth-Retaining Structure When a structure is earth-retaining water penetration can occur through the structure. If the water table is high, common examples of this is when water is trapped in a clay sump created when the foundations are excavated or as a result of long-term rainfall percolating down resulting in water logging of the ground, presenting a head of water under hydrostatic pressure which potentially flood the basement. Our role is that we as a Chartered Building Engineers and Certified Structural Waterproofing surveyors (CSSW) we specialise in the structural waterproofing of your structure so that you know of any issues in the designs by the waterproofing designer, this means that your designer can make the necessary changes in order to provide your property with all the necessary waterproofing solutions before your property is used. • When dealing with Waterproofing there are different approaches to both existing and new structures. At Olympic Construction our team are trained to handle both thanks to our years of experience within the industry. In this post, we’re focusing on existing structures. A building must be correctly surveyed to establish both its structural limitations and the make up of the external ground and drainage. It is our job to stop and reduce the water penetration from the ground to an acceptable level which is done using a variety of different systems, which will then see the design and implementation of an effective system by a waterproofing designer. In existing properties it is a common practice to apply a waterproof membrane to the internal face or negative of the structure usually, or by fitting a draining membrane which directs the ingress water to suitable collection and disposal points.
