  • Match Report: Plymouth Albion RFC 24-12 Darlington Mowden Park Plymouth Albion were finally back to winning ways after five games without a win, with a resounding victory at home to Darlington, in some of the worst conditions you’re likely to see a game of rugby be played in. With the wind howling from one end of the ground to the other, making it impossible to kick from one end, and turning 30 yard kicks into 60 yard kicks from the other, Head Coach Ryan Lamb was incredibly happy with how his side managed the conditions in both halves. “It was brutal, that’s probably one of the strongest wins I’ve seen on a rugby pitch in a fair few years, so I thought first half we managed that really well, our forwards got on top of them in scrum time and we got a decent lead going into the half at 24-0. “We just had to manage that second half as best we could and I think we did that, we starved them of a lot of ball and all of our defensive sets were decent. We gave them a few easy ins, and fair play because they capitalized on them with a couple of scores in the second half, but I thought we managed that really well.” There were a lot of good performances on the day, but hooker Harry Wilkinson picked up the man of the match award, and Lamb praised his number 2 on his performance. He said: “He did really well, I think he was instrumental to what we did around the scrum, I thought he had some fantastic carries in there, so it’s very well deserved for Wilko, and he’s obviously been back a few weeks now and he’s settling back in nicely.” Read full report: https://lnkd.in/ea-5Ty22 Report by Jack Sanderson. • A Bench for Remembrance – Royal Engineers Association Plymouth Branch Thirty-five years ago, members of the Royal Engineers Association Plymouth Branch commemorated The Fallen by the simple act of supplying a park bench to be installed immediately outside of the Council Chamber. Over the years that bench provided rest for the weary until it became dilapidated and the area was redeveloped in January 2023. Royal Engineers Association member Keith Fields, as Chairman of the Plymouth & District Federation of Ex-Services Associations, asked Ms Pauline Murphy (Deputy Lord Mayor and Armed Forces Champion), for her assistance in having the bench refurbished or replaced and if possible re-located adjacent the memorial to Major Waters RE VC on the Hoe. A man that saw and survived the horrors of conflict; living to rise to the rank of Colonel and become a leading light of the Structural Engineering world; Sir Arnold Horace Santo Waters VC, CBE, DSO, MC was a Plymouth man and above all a Sapper, of whom the Royal Engineers Association are rightly proud. Thanks to the efforts of the Deputy Lord Mayor, Keith Fields and council officer Catherine Arthurs; a fresh and resplendent bench now resides adjacent the VC memorial. On 6th December 2024 the commemorative bench was rededicated “In Remembrance” in a short ceremony attended by the Deputy Lord Mayor and party, officers and veterans of the Royal Engineers Association and serving reservists from1 Troop (Plymouth), 100 Field Squadron, Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) under the command of Major Tim Harnett RE. The ceremony included the laying of a wreath with the reading of the Remembrance Exhortation and Kohima Epitaph. The rededication speech from the Royal Engineers Association Chairman Darren King expressed the hope that those who take a rest there in future, will take a moment to reflect on the gallantry and sacrifices made by those Sappers whose lives and deaths have been marked by armed conflict across the globe. • Men’s Day Out is back for 2025 – with a twist! An unmissable mix of mates, miles and special memories, the South West’s most popular men’s walk is back - with a twist! - for 2025, raising vital funds for local hospice care. Registration is now open for the hugely popular Men’s Day Out in aid of St Luke's Hospice Plymouth and the compassionate, expert care the charity provides for local families going through the toughest of times. The flagship event – which last year attracted more than 2,000 sponsored walkers - is taking place on Saturday 22 March. One of the most hotly anticipated fixtures in the city’s calendar, the much-loved march is renowned for its unique blend of camaraderie for men of all ages, awareness and fundraising for St Luke’s, and much-needed, honest conversations about grief and bereavement. Many who participate in Men’s Day Out do so in memory of a lost loved one. Striding the streets together allows guys to open up to each other, share their experience of bereavement or facing a terminal diagnosis in the family, and do something positive and uplifting to support people in the local community. Over the ten years since the annual event started, it has raised more than £1m, helping St Luke’s continue its personalised end-of-life care for terminally ill patients at home and at the hospice’s specialist unit at Turnchapel. Sponsored by JEM Scaffolding Ltd, 2025’s event will see the men follow a scenic 12km (7.5 mile) route along the waterfront and through the city, starting at Plymouth Albion rugby ground as usual. But in a shake-up, they’ll be tackling the circuit in reverse, winding up back at Albion for a well-deserved hot dog and beverage before cheering on the local side in a rugby match to remember. Places at Men’s Day Out are expected to sell out quickly, so dodge the scrum, sign up now and start asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you. Registration costs just £35, but that only covers your official Men’s Day Out T-shirt, refreshments, a ticket for the rugby and event costs. It’s individual sponsorships and donations that really make a difference, and many entrants set themselves a fundraising target to tot up their total as they mark the miles. Penny Hannah, Head of Fundraising at St Luke’s, said: “We’re thrilled to announce that Men’s Day Out will be striding ahead for 2025 kindly supported by JEM Scaffolding Ltd. While the reversed route is a new feature, what will never change is the camaraderie, banter and feel-good factor our walkers know and love. “There is something special about seeing so many guys get together in support of St Luke’s compassionate care and each other too. Men often struggle to reach out for support, and being together on the move provides a rare opportunity get alongside others who understand how bereavement feels.
