Tanzila, one of our London mentors, told us last month that what she had enjoyed most about her experience mentoring a young person at Stratford School Academy was seeing her mentee "change their way of thinking"! She shared that she was surprised at the difference between the 'before' and the 'after' and celebrated a "great positive change"! How brilliant is that?! A lack of information, inspiration and/or confidence can prevent a young person making the education and employment choices they really want to. It's awful to think of young people closing the door on the future they could have because they don't know all their options, think that that particular education of employment choices aren't for 'people like me' or, worst of all, feel they aren't 'good enough'. Mentoring can, as Tanzila's experience shows, help young people get the information, inspiration and confidence they need and be the launch pad for a different, more fulfilling career journey. Yesterday 1MM expanded into Bolton!! We are delighted to have launched our first mentoring programme in Bolton at Bolton University Collegiate School, providing mentors for 39 of their sixth form students. We’re so excited for these students to unlock their potential with support from their mentors, and for our mentors to grow and learn as they get to know their mentees. Thank you Bolton UCS for all your efforts and enthusiasm in putting together this programme. A huge thank you to Warburtons who provided a whopping 21 mentors! Thank you also to Tim Baines for working with One Million Mentors to make sure our mentoring offer came to your hometown.

2024 has seen 1MM mentoring pass an important milestone - we're celebrating having now reached over 6000 young people since we began. We send a heartfelt "thank you" to every mentee, mentor, partner, funder, and supporter - past and present - for believing in the power of 1MM mentoring to help young people achieve their potential. What an amazing launch of our UCS Sixth Form One million Mentors Programme! This programme got underway with each sixth form student having thier very own industry mentor. The project will run over 4 months and will support our students personal development curriculum. One of our London mentors recently shared this quote with us when asked what she'd enjoyed most about mentoring. We love it because it highlights how much mentors grow through the mentoring relationship as well as mentees. Opportunities to get to know someone who comes from a very different background to our own are not that common and can result in something very powerful - for us as individuals and for our society. Supporting a young person as they work out what their challenges are, and how they will overcome then, and knowing we have played a part in helping them achieve the successes they deserve can be life-changing for both mentee and mentor! Saman highlights what it's "all about" and what makes mentoring such a meaningful experience: getting to know someone who's got a different perspective on life than you, building a relationship based on trust and mutual respect, and being able to benefit from guidance from someone willing to share their experience... We can't go back in time and pass on our what we've learned to our younger selves, but we can "give back" by offering it to someone else, someone like Saman who is keen to hear it!
