Wealth taxes are high on the policy agenda – a key theme at this year’s #G20, and proposed as a solution to help countries find the USD 1 trillion annual financing needed to meet United Nations climate goals. To effectively enforce wealth taxes, governments need to get better at collecting and sharing data on where the super-rich hold their money. Our Deputy Executive Director Louise Russell-Prywata outlines some of the links between #BeneficialOwnership and tax abuse, and starts thinking about making beneficial ownership reforms work for tax in this new piece.

Open Ownership is partnering with the Global Coalition to Fight Financial Crime and the LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) Risk Intelligence to launch a Task Force on Interoperable Beneficial Ownership Data. This initiative seeks to advance technology and data governance innovations to combat transnational corruption. Read more:

To celebrate International Anti-Corruption Day, we held a virtual event to launch three resources on legislating for beneficial ownership transparency. We were joined by legislators and other experts from across the world who shared their experiences. This event was co-organised by Open Ownership in partnership with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative). Yesterday at the United Nations Financing for Development (#FfD) Conference preparatory meeting, our Senior Advocacy Manager Agustina De Luca presented on behalf of Open Ownership and the Civil Society FfD Mechanism. This 12 December event on how effective #BeneficialOwnership data is in detecting financial crimes promises to be interesting. "𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲-𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁". This is the first academic paper we know of that uses Open Ownership's Beneficial Ownership Standard Data (for Denmark and Slovakia). The study authors presenting are Irene Tello Arista (Central European University), Mihaly Fazekas (CEU, Government Transparency Institute) and Antonia Volkotrub (Anti-corruption Action Center), with Andres Knobel (Tax Justice Network) as a discussant. Irene and Mihaly kindly presented this research earlier this year at the Symposium organised by Open Ownership and LSE International Inequalities Institute. #MLRN Transcrime
