BREAKING: As UK Christians prepare to host a ‘No Faith in Fossil Fuels’ service and begin a 24-hour prayer vigil on Ash Wednesday, a dozen bishops from Norway’s national church have spoken out about plans to extract North Sea oil by Equinor which is majority-owned by the Norwegian government. Four in five cars should be electric and half of homes should have heat pumps by 2040, according to the Climate Change Committee (CCC), the UK government's independent climate advisers. HSBC is ditching its target of reaching net-zero carbon emissions across its business by 2030 and planning for a 'more measured approach' to oil and gas lending. Campaigners are planning prayer vigils to urge cathedrals to move their business to banks that don’t invest in planet-heating fossil fuels. Several cathedrals have recently pledged to switch, including Worcester, Durham, Truro and Southwark. Since the 2015 Paris Agreement, the world’s 60 largest banks have provided $6.9 trillion in financial commitments to the fossil-fuel industry, which continues to expand despite dire scientific warnings. #StopFundingFossilFuels https://lnkd.in/gdh4ysFC

This Ash Wednesday, 5th March, a coalition of Christian charities including Operation Noah will hold a ‘No Faith in Fossil Fuels’ service of repentance and hope at St John’s Waterloo – an opportunity to connect Ash Wednesday observance with the harm fossil fuels are causing. Extreme weather events are expected to lead to volatile food prices throughout 2025, with cocoa and coffee showing the most dramatic price increases. Poorer households could cut energy bills by a quarter if rooftop solar were installed, a report has found. However, upfront costs mean that those who stand to benefit most from lower bills are prevented from getting solar panels, according to the Resolution Foundation, which has encouraged the government to consider means-tested grants or loans to cover costs. #JustTransition https://lnkd.in/eikBRkai

The latest example: BP will 'fundamentally reset' its strategy as its profits dropped sharply last year.
