Just Be Maritime is delighted to announce that it has now partnered with the ORCA (Organisation Cetacea) marine conservation charity, with our Officer Cadets now having the amazing opportunity to become ‘citizen scientists’ as ORCA OceanWatchers. As a UK-based charity, ORCA are helping to raise awareness about the critical habitats and hotspots for whales and dolphins that can be found in our oceans, and have collated all of the sighting records made by their citizen scientists over nearly 30 years.   Our participating cadets will first complete an ‘Introduction to Whale and Dolphin Identification’ course before progressing on to become an ORCA OceanWatcher.    #orca #maritime #cadets  ORCA (Organisation Cetacea) Careers At Sea https://lnkd.in/er6aYyxC

4th Stage BSc (Hons) Marine Biology and Oceanography Student

On October 21st, I had the opportunity to join my first ORCA (Organisation Cetacea) survey aboard Armorique travelling from Roscoff to Plymouth. We started recording at 13:34 BST (on effort), and although the early part of the survey was quiet, we collected essential environmental data. The sea state was mostly around a Beaufort 3, with occasional dips to a 2, and the swell was up to 1m. Visibility stayed around 17-18km, but we did have a patch of fog and precipitation that brought it down to 10km for a short time. The average speed was between 15-16 knots For a few hours, despite the glare from the sun on the port side (thankfully mitigated by the ship's course adjustments with the busy shipping!), we didn’t spot any cetaceans. But I had a hunch we might see something around sunset (which could be near their feeding/hunting time) – and that’s when the excitement began! From 16:53 to 18:00 (off effort), we were treated to an incredible spectacle of Common Dolphins! Our total count was 57 (including 5 calves) over 12 sightings. They were confidently identified by their body, splashing, and breaching behaviour. Many of them engaged in fast swimming and bow riding, delighting us on both the port and starboard sides. One mother and calf, in particular, seemed to really enjoy the bow riding – it was such a magical and heart warming sight. Unfortunately, phones weren’t allowed on the bridge due to security procedures, but the memories of that moment are etched in my mind forever. It was such a special experience, one we had been hoping for. Huge thanks to my amazing ORCA team – Jock, Sarah, and David – who made my first survey so enjoyable and informative. I enjoyed our deep thought provoking conversations too 😀 I’m incredibly grateful for this experience and can't wait for more surveys to come. Monitoring our oceans and helping protect marine life is such a rewarding and important job 🌍🐋 #ORCA #FirstSurvey #citizenscience #datacollection #marineconservation #commondolphins #marinelife #cetacean #france #roscoff

Very excited that ORCA (Organisation Cetacea) is recruiting a new member of the team to help grow our individual giving activities and help secure the future of our conservation work! It's a great organisation to work for and such a good role for someone with experience who is ready to step into a management role and take responsibility for developing and delivering a fundraising strategy. Please do share with your network if you aren't interested yourself, and if you have questions then drop me a message and will be happy to answer them! #conservation #jobs #whales #dolphins #charity #fundraising

    Expedition cruising | Leadership

Yesterday I fulfilled one of my lifetime dreams and ran a marathon👟 By far, the toughest thing I’ve done physically– but I am proud I completed it and had the best support ever – from my brother joining me for the marathon, to my family greeting me at the finish line, and I ran it in Vilnius, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, if not the world😉 🐳While it was a deeply personal challenge, I was hoping to raise some money for ORCA (Organisation Cetacea), a charity that supports the cetaceans of the oceans- our industry benefits greatly from visiting the areas where whales and dolphins congregate in large numbers and delight expedition cruise travellers who observe them in the wild – and it’s just a small token of thank you for the work the organizations such as ORCA (Organisation Cetacea) do who represent the interests of these wonderful creatures and work tirelessly to make sure that they are protected. If you would like to support them, here is the link: https://lnkd.in/e2Jt4V4C ORCA (Organisation Cetacea) also works with several expedition cruise companies by sending ocean conservationists onboard and offering various engaging Citizen Science opportunities for the guests alongside collecting scientific data, as well as providing training for the crew and officers how to avoid whale strikes and more– if you would like to learn more, please reach out to Steve Jones. Thank you for your support and have a great week ahead!
