Barcode Tracking, Simplified.

About us

Orca Scan is a barcode scanner app for iOS and Android that allows anyone to create a barcode system without code. It started life in 2016 as a very simple prototype to help a teenager with his summer job. It was released in the app stores in 2017, where it received thousands of downloads and hundreds of feature requests. It turned out that organisations worldwide shared the same problem: although barcodes are everywhere, barcode scanners are not, leaving many with the tedious, error-prone task of writing down barcode numbers or typing them into spreadsheets. Since that day, Orca Scan has grown to over 320k users, with 60% of the Fortune 500 companies and 40% of FTSE 100 companies using Orca, including teams within companies such as Disney, NASA, Apple and many more. Our job is simple: to work closely with our users to make barcode technology accessible to everyone, regardless of technical skill or budget.

Orca Scan was part of Small Business Saturday this weekend. It was a great opportunity to share Orca’s global impact with Government Ministers and explore how we can continue making a difference in the NHS and industries worldwide. Big thanks to Martin Clark and Allia for organising 🙏

It was Small Business Saturday this weekend and Allia had the pleasure of welcoming Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, to the Allia Business Centre at Cambridge Guildhall. He heard about Allia’s work supporting small businesses especially those making social or environmental impact – and how the charitable bonds that he first heard about when working for David Blunkett in 1998 are now listed on the London Stock Exchange! He was introduced to 2 Allia tenants, first Gavin Shelton of COFARM FOUNDATION who has created a model for community-based farming that has taken off in Cambridge but includes a franchise in Northern Ireland that Hilary was pleased to learn about – as was our local MP Daniel Zeichner who happens to be farms minister. Then he met John Doherty and Owen Doherty of Orca Scan whose revolutionary use of barcodes could save the NHS zillions in waste. All this held in the delightful cafe of small business Orlenes Kitchen in the Guildhall! Thanks to Cambridge City Council leader Mike Davey for facilitating the visit and the secretary of state’s team for making it through on a stormy day!
