The quest for net zero on an epic scale – developing one of the largest floating offshore wind farms in the world
About us
Ossian (pronounced ‘os-si-un’) from The Poems of Ossian is a proposed offshore wind farm located in waters off the east coast of Scotland. On completion it will be one of the largest floating offshore wind farms in the world, producing up to 3.6GW of renewable energy – enough to power up to 6 million* homes annually. Occupying 858km² of seabed 84km off the east coast of Scotland, Ossian is one of the largest lease areas to be offered by Crown Estate Scotland to any bidder in the ScotWind leasing round. Ossian represents a new tradition in power generation. Its scale and floating technology make it a game changer in the UK renewable energy sector and a critical driving force behind our journey to net zero. It will offset up to 7.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year and will provide a significant proportion of the renewable energy capacity we need to meet Scottish and UK government ambitions. Ossian is a joint venture between: o SSE Renewables Limited - a leading developer, owner and operator of renewable energy projects and assets across the UK and Ireland o Marubeni Corporation - a Japanese integrated trading and investment business with extensive interests in power generation and renewable energy o Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners - a fund management company specialising in tailor-made investments in energy infrastructure assets globally within the renewables and greenfield sectors This powerful partnership brings together the extensive local knowledge, world leading technology and global expertise needed to deliver significant and enduring social, economic and decarbonisation benefits. * Based on Typical Domestic Consumption Values (Medium Electricity Profile Class 1, 2,900kWh/household; OFGEM, Jun 2021), typical 50% projected wind load factor, projected installed capacity of 3,600MW. 7.5m tonnes of CO2 reductions/annum based on expected annual output against average 440 tonnes CO2 per GWh for all non-renewable fuels, Aug 2021

New research reveals that Scotland now boasts three times as many green jobs as in 2021. Project’s such as Ossian are ideally suited to build on the progress to date to maximise the opportunities for Scotland’s workforce and support a just transition. #RenewableEnergy #OffshoreWind #GreenCareers
New research has indicated Scotland is poised to reap the rewards by leading the just transition to net-zero. The green jobs market in Scotland has tripled in size since 2021, outpacing the rest of the UK, and grew 8.3% since 2023.

Earlier this week, Ossian's lead procurement and commercial manager David Paterson and project engineer Grant Beaton attended the Scottish Enterprise event on Developing Manufacturing Competitiveness in the Scottish OSW Supply Chain, gaining valuable insights into the manufacturing processes to be successful in offshore wind. Important discussions took place on competitive supply chains for the offshore wind industry, focussing on automated welding from TPS WeldTech Ltd and digitalisation and productivity from the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland. 🖥️ The development of manufacturing technology within the industry will be key to driving more efficiency in the manufacturing and fabrication, as well as helping projects like Ossian to support local content. #ManufacturingProcess #RenewableEnergy #SupplyChain

Last week Ossian's supply chain plan manager Katie Black attended the Sustainable Scotland Series: Green Skills and Energy Transition at The Scotsman Green Skills Conference to gain valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in building a skilled workforce for the energy sector. 👷 One of the many highlights was hearing from St Machar Academy pupils in the Girls in Energy initiative, sharing their experiences in overcoming barriers to careers in energy. The optimism among panelists was inspiring and showed the true appetite for development in the industry. 💡 It was also encouraging to hear Dr. Su Bryan, dean of the faculty of science, health and the environment at UHI, discuss the success of the STEM Outreach programme, proudly supported by Ossian, which continues to engage young students across Scotland. 🤝 #GreenSkillsConference #EnergyTransition #STEMCareers

This week, Ossian’s stakeholder engagement manager, Lisa Di Mambro-Fitzpatrick had the privilege of attending and presenting at her first Offshore Wind North East Event. The North East’s industrial heritage, combined with huge capabilities makes the region well placed to drive the growth of offshore wind. A highlight of the event was hearing from apprentices Tom Beezer and Erin Collings, who shared their journeys with SMD. Their passion and dedication really showcased the importance of nurturing future talent in the industry. The event also emphasised the need for early engagement with the supply chain to ensure the success of upcoming projects. Collaboration from the outset leads to more efficient and sustainable solutions. Finally, a shout out to the Energi Coast Cluster for its critical role in supporting global offshore wind projects. Thanks to NOF and everyone involved for such an engaging and valuable event. #Offshorewind #Northeast #Renewableenergy #FutureTalent #Supplychain #Innovation
