Improving educational outcomes for children through research-led oral language assessment, intervention and enrichment.

About us

OxEd and Assessment is a University of Oxford spinout company that was launched to take the research of Professor Charles Hulme's research group on language assessment and intervention through to practical application in schools. Oral language is the springboard to education but many children entering school have language difficulties. Our early language programme provides early identification, intervention and enrichment for all children with a positive, proven impact in improving early language skills. A series of randomised controlled trials and independent evaluations of our programme have demonstrated its effectiveness in improving educational outcomes. Our language resources support children from preschool through to 11 years old: Assessments: LanguageScreen - a simple, effective digital assessment to assess children's speaking and listening skills and monitor the progress of all children. ReadingScreen - a quick and accurate digital assessment of word and nonword reading that can be delivered by teachers' aids or teachers. When used with LanguageScreen, a Simple View of Reading Report is generated to immediately identify students at risk of falling behind. Interventions: NELI - a 20-week scripted programme providing additional targeted support for those with the weakest oral language skills through small group and individual sessions. NELI Whole Class - a programme of whole class language enrichment activities for all children designed to complement NELI and support teachers in developing all children's language skills. NELI Preschool - a new nursery-delivered oral language enrichment and intervention programme for children in the year before they enter formal education.

  • Individual sessions are a vital part of the NELI Intervention, providing focused support tailored to each child’s language development. Following the familiar structure of group sessions, they emphasise active listening, vocabulary, and narrative skills while offering extra time to revisit challenging areas. These sessions also deepen narrative work through additional storytelling prompts, ensuring children gain confidence in their communication skills. For children who grasp certain vocabulary quickly, individual sessions also provide opportunities for extension and enrichment, helping them explore words in new contexts and strengthen their language foundations. #NELIProgramme

  • Published in Language, Speech and Hearing Services in Schools in 2024, this study reports the development and standardisation of a mobile app—LanguageScreen—that can be used by education professionals to assess children’s language ability. ✅ LanguageScreen correlates well with much longer, well-standardised tests of language ability. ✅ The LanguageScreen total score gives the best estimate of a child's language level with excellent reliability. ✅ Approximately 350,000 children were included in the standardisation sample for robust and accurate results. • Narrative skills are a crucial part of early language development. Just like other language skills, narrative skills develop with age, following typical milestones. By understanding narrative milestones and using strategies like those in the NELI Programme, we can help children become confident storytellers. Find out more about narrative milestones and check out our infographic for a breakdown of key narrative milestones and how they progress over time. • Developing narrative skills is a vital part of the NELI Intervention, aided by scaffolded activities in weekly small group and individual sessions. NELI sessions feature nursery rhymes, picture stories and personal event narratives, reflecting experiences children encounter in everyday life. By incorporating storytelling into the NELI sessions, children not only build confidence in their language abilities but also strengthen essential literacy skills – all while having fun! #NELIProgramme

  • The NELI scale up impact evaluation report was published by Education Endowment Fund (EEF) in 2023. This report highlights the positive impact of NELI on children’s oral language skills when implemented at schools at national scale, in real world conditions. ✅Children who received the NELI programme made the equivalent of four additional months’ progress in language skills compared to those who didn't receive the programme. ✅Children from lower socio-economic backgrounds made seven months' additional progress in their oral language development! ✅English language learners also made the same additional progress as children speaking English at home. ✅NELI's positive effects are greater the more sessions a child receives - but delivering some of the sessions will still benefit children.
