🌼 Happy International Women’s Day 2025! 🙌 This year’s theme is about accelerating action for gender equality. As Oxford FemTech Society, we believe that supporting #education is one of the most powerful ways to do this. We envision a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination, a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive, where women’s health, entrepreneurship, and leadership are not sidelined. We are dedicated to: ✅ Support women and girls in leadership, decision-making, business, and healthcare professions. ✅ Help women and girls as (potential) patients make informed decisions about their health. ✅ Provide women and girls with access to quality education and training opportunities. Early on, our President Christiane Hagel made education a core pillar of FemTech at University of Oxford, ensuring that knowledge and resources are accessible to all, and came up with the idea to establish a new book collection initiative. 📖 A Year of Impact: The FemTech Book Collection 🎉 Exactly one year ago, on #IWD2024, Christiane established the first FemTech Book Collection, inspired by hours spent in the library working on her PhD, surrounded by books and students, realising that there was not enough updated literature on women’s health with a link to empower women and girls to for example learn coding and business skills, but also on how women and women’s bodies have been misunderstood, stigmatised, and under- or misrepresented in history, literature, data and information. The fabulous librarians at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford were immediately convinced by the idea and helped establish the first FemTech Book Corner. And this year, we are thrilled to announce that our collection at Green Templeton College Library has grown again! The new additions cover topics such as: 📚 The history of how #womensbodies have been perceived in society. 📗 The global fight for #womenshealth and gender equity in medicine. 📙 Breaking barriers as #femaleentrepreneurs and raising funds for startups. 📘The cost of sexism, #reproductivepolitics, and endometriosis management. 💡 The collection is more than just a resource of knowledge, it is also an inspiration for #innovation and #entrepreneurship and empowers students to turn knowledge into action. After one year, we are proud to share that our collection is one of the most borrowed in the library, with shelves often empty due to the high demand! The big interest in these books proves just how important these conversations and literature are. Let’s support essential #voices from women who dedicate their time to write about FemTech, women’s health, and business to students worldwide, including male students and boys! We must educate them too especially about these topics! Let’s please also start to update medical literature and education to reflect gender equity and inclusivity! 💜 #AccelerateAction #IWD2025 #FemTech #WomensHealth, Sara Shaw, Denise Lievesley

🔍 New evidence shows link between endometriosis and physical traumatic experiences An international study has found evidence linking traumatic experiences and stressful events with endometriosis. According to the findings, the condition appears to be closely linked to trauma involving contact, such as in physical abuse or sexual assault. The study was based on observational and genetic data analyses from 8,276 women with endometriosis and 240,117 controls in the UK Biobank. Through genetic analysis, the researchers found that this relationship seems to be independent of genetic predisposition to endometriosis. 💬 Dora Koller, first author of the article and researcher at the Department of Genetics, Microbiology and Statistics of the UB’s Faculty of Biology, notes that: “While psychological trauma has been associated with endometriosis, to date, there has been little information on the role of the type of trauma and genetic predisposition. “These results challenge established paradigms by uncovering shared genetic mechanisms linking endometriosis with post-traumatic stress disorder and other types of trauma, while providing new insights into how different types of traumatic events are associated with the disease.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/etaiuki6 #endometriosis #endo #womenshealth #womenshealthmatters #femtech #healthtech #genderhealthgap #research #innovation #healthinequalities #women

Endometriosis is not a 'white woman’s disease.' Data has consistently revealed that Black women are at an increased risk of experiencing worse outcomes when it comes to their reproductive health compared to their White counterparts. On average, it takes 8-12 years to get diagnosed, but Black women are 50% less likely to get a diagnosis at all, due to systemic racism in healthcare, according to Hertility's Inequality Report. Pain is dismissed. Symptoms are ignored. Access to care is limited. Even when diagnosed, Black women are less likely to receive surgery and more likely to experience complications. Reproductive justice is about seeing the bigger picture, because better healthcare, equitable access and dismantling discrimination is what it’ll take to create real change. This is about health, dignity and justice for all.
