    “Alcohol is holding you back.” This week I am joined by Ruari Fairbairns—a former oil broker from London who after a falling out with booze, decided it was time to put the plug in the jug. The benefits were so profound that he later walked away from his career in finance to become a full-time advocate for an alcohol-free lifestyle. In this episode, we delve into the gradual transformation of society’s relationship with alcohol, dissecting the negative repercussions on both mind and body.     Here's something you might not have thought of as you approach 2025, but hear us out. Forget the New Year’s resolutions that tend to fizzle out faster than a sparkler on New Year’s Eve. How about we try something a bit different for 2025? Have you thought about picking just one word—a simple, no-fuss theme for the whole year. It’s like choosing the flavour of your 2025. This one word is going to be your buddy for the year, reminding you of what you want to focus on without getting tied down by traditional specific goals. It’s down-to-earth, easy to remember, and hey, it’s pretty flexible too. Let’s say this year left you feeling like a human doing rather than a human being. In that case your word might be ‘Pause’, to remind you to take those moments for yourself. Or if you’ve been hovering around that big dream but not diving in, maybe ‘Leap’ is the nudge you need every day. Choose something that feels good; something that sticks in your mind and points you in the right direction whenever you think of it. So while you’re in this magical in-between time, have a think.     As the year draws to closing, you might find yourself caught up in the hustle and bustle of festive commitments. It’s all too easy to get your tinsel in a tangle, with holiday to-do lists and the needs of others taking priority over your own well-being. You don't have to lock yourself away for hours at a time and letting everyone fend for themselves, appealing as that may sound at times. But it’s important to take time to maintain the foundations that keep you balanced and happy. Remember to breathe deeply, protect your sleep, nourish your body with the nutrients it needs, move and stretch, reflect on your thoughts and feelings, and connect with those who mean the most to you. You can use use these things three categories as a guide! Mind: Activities that soothe, inspire, and rejuvenate your mind. It could be anything from a quiet meditation session, getting lost in a good book, journaling your thoughts, or learning something new. Body: Ways to nurture and care for your body. For instance, a refreshing walk in the crisp winter air, a calming yoga session, a bike ride to feel the wind in your hair, or preparing and enjoying a healthy, delicious meal. Soul: Experiences that enrich your soul; connecting you spiritually, creatively, or emotionally with yourself and the world around you. This might include listening to music that moves you, painting or spending time on another creative hobby, cooking or baking favourite foods, volunteering for a cause close to your heart, or simply catching up with a friend. Remember, there’s no greater gift you can give yourself than health and happiness.
