PACEY's childcare and early years awards spotlight 🔦 Meet Amanda Calloway, the well-deserved winner of our Childminder of the year award 🙌 Amanda is a Childminder from North Wales, offering a home-from-home environment to ease the transition into childcare. Outdoor play is central to her day, and she’s pursuing accreditation in the Curiosity Approach. Amanda is also working to increase Welsh language use in her setting, reflecting the bilingual education available in her rural village. She feels blessed to watch the children’s characters and skills develop and only wishes she'd discovered her vocation sooner. #earlyyears #childcare #award #winner #spotlight #childminder #congratulations

Continuing our post-conference reflections, we revisit Ofsted’s informative talk delivered by Sam Sleeman-Boss, NPQICL and Wendy Ratcliff on curriculum and pedagogy and their role in early years settings. Sam and Wendy highlighted the importance of a well-planned curriculum that: 1️⃣ Is based on proactive thinking 2️⃣ Is the product of clear consideration of the sequence of knowledge necessary for children to make progress 3️⃣ Ensures that all children are prepared for future challenges They explained that once the knowledge and skills children need to learn are established, the focus shifts to pedagogy - the 'how' of teaching. Pedagogy is effective through a mix of different approaches which play is a significant part of, but children also need some explicit modelling, guided learning and direct teaching. After nearly three weeks since our amazing childcare and early years conference, we’re reflecting on our President, Penny Tassoni’s insightful talk that kick started the day: ‘Two- year-olds- a protected species?’. Penny is an icon in the sector known for her work on child development, transitions and play. We are lucky to have her as our president and so many in the audience were eager to hear her talk for the first time. Amongst many things, Penny talked about the importance of consistency of approach - for practitioners and parents - how practitioners can help parents with this and how can they help children to realise that they can't have everything that they want and everything that they see. She also re-in forced the message to prioritise settling in. A child’s need for proximity to the parent/ carer is very strong and settling in sessions help to create a new attachments. Without them, a child will become distressed which could have long term impacts. For example, there is a link to situational mutism . Everyone can view Penny's presention slides here: https://lnkd.in/ej-KVHpS
