Once you produce enough energy to cover available demand, any further production is effectively worthless. As #renewable penetration grows, so does the amount of overproduction. This problem is sometimes referred to as price cannibalisation. While low prices are welcome for consumers, they are potentially a problem when it comes to attracting investment to the industry. This only looks set to get worse in 2025 as Europe’s #energytransition advances. The solution is #energystorage, so renewable electricity produced during periods of overproduction can be used to offset higher power market prices at other times. We unpack the potential for such energy arbitrage services here: https://ow.ly/OboJ50UXH2u

Diesel gensets might no longer be the power technology of choice for off-grid applications like remote mobile base stations: - significant running costs - need refilling and maintaining at regular intervals - diesel fuel is subject to volatility And diesel is not great for the environment: - spills contaminating land and water - exhaust fumes causing air pollution - carbon emissions. Technology is now able to offer cleaner and more reliable alternatives to diesel even for high-uptime applications such as base station power provision. A fuel cell model that uses methanol as a hydrogen carrier could be the answer. Unlike hydrogen, methanol is easy to store and handle and is readily available on a commercial basis around the world. Did you know: According to a 2023 Reuters report "energy storage will likely become a priority technology for investment between 2024 and 2026, overtaking solar PV." More than two fifths of those surveyed said their organisations planned to invest in storage within the next three years, compared to 33% planning to put money into solar. Photovoltaic (PV) solar technology is undoubtedly the energy industry success story of the decade. However, increasing value in storing excess solar production for use when the sun is not shining, and the wind is not blowing, means storage makes sense not only from a decarbonisation perspective but also from an investment point of view. Find out how #EnergyStorage is emerging as something energy investors like *even more* than solar. https://ow.ly/7cvf50UPtjT

On the grid, a lithium-ion #battery is a versatile beast. Used behind the meter, batteries can help improve self-consumption of on-site renewables, and store low-cost grid supplies for use when the price of electricity rises. On the main electricity network, they can help overcome grid constraints, regulate frequency and voltage, and perform energy arbitrage operations, among other functions. But there's one further area where lithium-ion battery stationary storage systems can have a valuable role: next to #renewables. A #renewableenergy plant can be built so its total capacity is greater than that of the grid connection—say by 10% or 20%—with the aim of storing overproduction at times of peak output and then delivering the stored electricity after production falls. According to research, the top four markets for renewables co-location are Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Poland. Co-locating batteries with solar is not just smart, it's the key to solving our energy trilemma: security, sustainability, and affordability. Battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity soared by an eye-popping 94% in 2023. a whopping 17.2 GWh of new capacity added. An incredible 70% of that came from residential batteries teaming up with solar systems. As we close down for the year we're looking back over 12 months of great progress for Pacific Green in 2024. The last year will be remembered as one of mixed results for the #energytransition globally. Worldwide demand for coal hit a peak, global warming went off the scale, and European solar and wind growth stalled. But at Pacific Green we achieved strong progress in all the markets in which we operate, as we move closer towards our global goal of 12GWh #energystorage capacity. Take a look back with us here in this month-by-review of some of the highlights: https://ow.ly/CJEK50UvPBI

Grid-scale battery technology is now a critical tool in delivering global climate goals, enabling #RenewableEnergy to be deployed consistently, at scale. While big batteries have virtually no direct GHG emissions once operational, this doesn’t mean the sector has a free pass on sustainability. At Pacific Green, we’re proud of the role our projects and technology are playing in accelerating the #NetZero transition. But we’re also aware that we, as a company, must always operate sustainably.
