Last week, we were proud to host our second annual safety conference, bringing together over 70 delegates from across the paddlesport sector. Building on the success of last year’s conference, the day focused on how we can collectively reach and influence those heading out on the water, equipping them with the knowledge to make informed decisions and keep safe. We also reflected on the positive impact of our joint #PaddleSafe campaign with the RNLI which saw our messaging refined for 2024. Thank you to all those who attended for your important contributions and efforts to improve paddlesport safety and prevent future incidents. 📣 New national sewage spill map released by Water UK As a member of the Clean Water Sports Alliance, Paddle UK welcomes the new map showing real-time sewage spills in rivers and seas. This is an important step forward. For the first time paddlers and other water users will be able to see when, where and for how long a storm overflow has been active. The increased transparency will allow water users to make informed decisions. We hope that Water UK will continue to work with the Alliance to develop the platform further, to put public health front and centre. New paddle trail and access points for paddlers in the Trent Valley 🌿 🌳 In collaboration with the Transforming the Trent Valley, we've developed a new Trent Valley Paddle Guide. Paddlers can enjoy a 17-mile trail along the River Trent, River Tame and connecting canals while learning more about the waterway's history and wildlife. Thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Canoe Foundation access to the waterways has been improved too. Fantastic to see Phil B. MP reference the #OutdoorsForAll manifesto in parliament, calling for greater access to green and blue space for outdoor activities including swimming, walking, water sports, and climbing. The benefits of outdoor activity is well documented, but to make the most of it we must see an extension of the public’s open access rights to the countryside and to water. Fantastic work from our friends Paddle UK

Encouraging to see access to waterways raised at the Rural Affairs debate in the House of Commons this week 💡 Member of Parliament for Bolton West, Phil Brickell MP, raised the need for improved access to our inland waters and recognised our #PaddlersCode as an example of best practice.
It was great to see the issue of our lack of access to inland waters raised at a Rural Affairs debate yesterday in the House of Commons. Member of Parliament for Bolton West, Phil Brickell MP articulated the issues around current voluntary arrangements and also highlighted our #PaddlersCode as an example of good practice. Lets hope the Minister adds this to the 'to do list'... Paddle UK https://lnkd.in/eBPu4T9M

📣 Paddlers included in new bathing water reforms. A public consultation into changes to bathing water rules will look at including paddlers for the first time. Currently only swimmers are included in the definition of ‘bathers', but that could begin to include other water sports enthusiasts. It's set to be the first big shake up of bathing water reforms in over a decade. We'll be working closely with the Clean Water Sports Alliance to input into the consultation and providing guidance to our members and community on how to respond.
