We are thrilled that Waterstones Children's Laureate and Macmillan Children's Books author Frank Cottrell Boyce will be an Author of the Fair at London Book Fair 2025. He said: "In my role as the current Waterstones Children’s Laureate, I’ve launched the ‘Reading Rights’ campaign in partnership with BookTrust, calling for national provision so that every child – from their earliest years – has access to books, reading and the transformative ways in which they improve long-term life chances. I’m looking forward to joining the LBF audience in London next year to cherish what reading together means, and what as an industry we can bring to families.” Frank will be speaking on Thursday 13th March. Further details of the sessions will be announced soon. #childrenlaureate #waterstoneschildrenslaureate #frankcottrellboyce #literacy #readingrights https://lnkd.in/ed5i_GQQ

We are thrilled that Colm Tóibín’s Long Island (Picador) has been named Waterstones Irish Book of the Year 2024. “I worked slowly and tentatively on Long Island,” he said. “I followed my instinct but I was never sure. So it makes a big difference now that this novel Long Island is Waterstones Irish Book of the Year. It cheers me up and makes me feel that maybe I did something right.” Lily Keohane, Waterstones Irish commercial manager, described the novel as “deceptively quiet” and “full of longing”, while Liam Caldwell from Waterstones Foyleside said that the “propulsive prose style in Tóibín’s sequel to Brooklyn pulls the reader in on page one with a tense situation and doesn’t let up until its breathtaking end.” Read the full story via the link below. #waterstonesirishbookoftheyear #waterstones #colmtoibin #waterstonesirishbookoftheyear2024

The Booker Prize 2024 will be announced this evening with James by Percival Everett (Mantle) in the running for the prestigious award, along with five other outstanding works of fiction. Enthralling and ferociously funny, James is a profound meditation on identity, belonging and the sacrifices we make to protect the ones we love. It is also a bold reimagining of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as the enslaved Jim emerges to reclaim his voice and defy the conventions that have consigned him to the margins. Leah Cowan introduces some of Percival Everett's must-read works, from Booker-nominated The Trees, and Erasure, the novel behind the Oscar-winning film American Fiction, via the link below. #bookerprize2024 #bookerprize #percivaleverett #james #bookerprizeshortlist

Did you know black job applicants are up to 50% less likely to be called to interview than identically qualified white people? In the groundbreaking The Science of Racism (Picador), Professor Keon West explores decades’ worth of clear, factual, rigorous science – the data that reveals truths about racism that are shocking and tragic, but also (somehow) funny and entertaining. Read his interview with Caroline Sanderson at The Bookseller via the link below. #TheScienceofRacism #Racism #KeonWest #Picador

Children's reading enjoyment has plummeted to its worst level in two decades, according to new research from the National Literacy Trust. 2 in 3 children and young people don't enjoy reading - the worst levels recorded by the charity in almost two decades. Frank Cottrell Boyce, Waterstones Children's Laureate, has warned that "we are at risk of losing a generation". To address the crisis, the National Literacy Trust is urging the government to form a reading taskforce and action plan with multi-sector partners. Alison Ruane, M.D. of Macmillan Children's Books said: "We are committed to finding and creating the very best books to engage young people. We will tirelessly promote the joy and benefits of reading and we will continue to engage with partners and the wider industry to improve access to books through libraries in schools and the community. Our mission has never been more urgent or important."
