About us
PBI is a leading NGO working to protect human rights defenders at risk. We provide life-saving support to community leaders and other human rights defenders in some of the most dangerous countries in the world. Each day human rights defenders speak out for the rights of others. Each day they risk their livelihoods, their liberty and, in many cases, their lives. Attacks, abductions, and assassinations are on the increase; 2018 was the deadliest year on record and 2019 is set to match it. PBI defends the defenders. On the ground, we provide direct protection and support, to keep defenders alive and help their work thrive. Our international observers accompany at-risk defenders, standing shoulder to shoulder with them in a display of solidarity that deters violent attacks. Uniquely, we also provide longer-term preventative support aimed at building the resilience of human rights defenders - from security monitoring and psychological assistance to diplomatic actions and self-protection training. We also provide protection through our advocacy work at all levels - from the soldier at a local checkpoint to the leaders of the UN. Our activities help create the right security, policy and political environments for defenders to carry out their work without fear of intimidation. At a global level, we build expert and political networks that can be mobilised at short notice to provide much-needed support. As a preventative approach, we provide defenders with a platform to amplify their voices, ensuring that their calls for rights and freedoms are heard by those who can make a difference. Our crucial political support building contributes to protecting and raising the visibility, credibility and legitimacy of human rights defenders at local, national and international level. We are also involved in outreach, fundraising and recruiting and training of volunteers. Photo banner: Manu Valcarce

🚨 STOP SCROLLING 🚨 💷 We need your help to raise 20,000 pounds in the Big Give #ChristmasChallenge to ensure we can continue our work with defenders who are on the frontline of pushing for #corporateaccountability Donate today 👉 :https://lnkd.in/dmNqp2wA
📢 Your Big Give Pushes for a #UK Law on Corporate Accountability! From December 3rd-10th we are taking part in the #BigGive #ChristmasChallenge to ensure that we can continue our important work on #corporateaccountability: https://lnkd.in/dmNqp2wA Our latest report, "The Case for Change: Why Human Rights Defenders Need a UK Law on Mandatory Due Diligence," exposes six devastating case studies from #Colombia, #Honduras, #Indonesia, and #Mexico. These case studies highlight the troubling links between UK business operations and environmental and human rights violations in each of these countries: https://lnkd.in/dFqzrN-T We must ensure that #Indigenous leaders, #tradeunionists, and #environmental activists are recognised as vital agents of change in their communities—natural allies to the UK’s foreign policy goals. Your Big Give can help support the creation of a UK law on mandatory due diligence that holds companies accountable, ending the heartbreaking negative impacts on defenders, their communities, and their ancestral lands. When you donate to PBI UK, you are joining a movement to ensure that UK-based companies respect human rights and environmental standards wherever they operate. Together, we can build a future where people come before profits and defenders of justice can work safely. 💪 Make your Big Give today, and let’s stand together in solidarity with those who fight for human and environmental rights: https://lnkd.in/ekcKa8b5 #HumanRights #BizHumRights #EnvironmentalRights #PBIacompaña

"Those standing up to corporate abuse often pay the ultimate price." New report from Peace Brigades International looks at reprisals against human rights defenders who stood up to UK-linked business and makes the case for a UK law on mandatory due diligence. "To ensure the sustainability of UK business and position the UK as a leader in corporate accountability, the Government should act now and commit to a Business, Human Rights and Environment Act." 🗣️Today, a cross-regional group of #HumanRightsDefenders and community representatives met with parliamentarians and civil servants to lay out what laws and actions they want to see from the UK government to help them safely defend their land & the environment. 🧵 📢 We delivered copies of our new report documenting links between British businesses & attacks on human rights defenders, making the case for a new UK law on mandatory due diligence, so that corporations prevent violations & are held to account when they occur. #bizhumanrights 🇲🇽 Jesus Javier Thomas described El Bajío, #Mexico, where defenders were murdered after protesting illegal mining: “This is a problem between a British company and a Mexican community. We need international pressure to get the response we’ve been denied. The UK is key”. 🇮🇩 From Indonesia, Norman Jiwan: “We need strong UK #CorporateAccountability legislation that covers human rights, environment, Indigenous people and deforestation” 🇮🇩 Tigor Gemdita: “It needs to regulate supply chains and respect collective rights” 📣 Pamuk Teófilo Kukush Paati & Tsanim Evaristo Wajai Asamat of the Wampis nation discussed their experience of UK banks investing without effective due diligence: environmental devastation and escalating violence fuelled by palm oil cultivation on #Indigenous lands. 🔊 Other brave human rights defenders shared their testimony. They cannot be named because of the risks they run in telling their stories and campaigning for change. ✊ We stand in solidarity with the communities defending their territory and our planet in the face of threats. We stand for #CorporateAccountability. 👇 Read “The Case for Change: Why human rights defenders need a UK law on mandatory due diligence”: https://lnkd.in/dFqzrN-T
