Please consider supporting Tia with this research if you work in social care, or have staff teams that do. It will only take 5 minutes and might really help us understand the importance of language in incident forms. https://lnkd.in/eu75Nex5 #languagematters #dobetter #pbs #pbsuk
UPDATE!! After 1200 responses we have closed down this survey. Don't worry if your views weren't included - you can contribute to part 2. I am so excited to launch this research project. Do you, or your staff, work in social care? Please consider completing (OR SHARING!) this 5 minute survey (you might win a gift card just on time for Christmas!) so we can better understand the impact of language in incident recording. "How to Lose Clients and Confuse People" - what a great way to actually learn from our mistakes. "Children with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) have often had extended exposure to many incidents of inappropriate adult modelling of relationships. This can cause a child to distrust adults, develop inappropriate methods for conflict resolution, and display low levels of distress tolerance skills." Krista Rowe, Ethan Buchan and Barney Huxtable from The Behaviour Clinic will discuss how their own experiences have allowed them to learn to overcome many mistakes made in therapy settings whilst acting in the best interests of each individual child. We cannot express how proud we are of both of these ladies for even being nominated. They were already winners to us. But Hannah Newcombe only went and WON IT!! Winner of the 2024 Woman Achieving Greatness in Social Care GIRL POWER (Individual) Award. Hannah was the first hire we ever made and we’ve congratulated ourselves ever since. We boast about her all the time. It was wonderful watching you get the recognition you deserve. #socialcarewomen #girlpower #proudemployer

Token systems can be great - but can also be just awful! I spent an hour or so this weekend designing a sticker system for my kids (the over-excitement pre-Christmas is real!). I found these fantastic online resources which are perfect. Token systems are not just for kids. Adults can love them too (anyone else think that free Costa Coffee when you’ve already bought 10 just tastes better??) Tesco Clubcard anyone? However, this weekend got me thinking about some of the dangers of these systems after my husband endured a ‘code red’ tantrum with my two year old and, in a moment of justifiable exasperation, threatened to take a sticker away again. Don’t panic - I intervened! If you - like my poor husband - don’t have much experience using these, here are a few tips to avoid them going wrong. - Once a token/sticker is won - it’s won! You cannot take it back again… ever. (Like really ever). Yes there are complicated systems where people do this, but if you’re not experienced - no. Step away from the token. - Tokens don’t have to be stickers - it can be checkmarks, signatures, or physical things - whatever works for that person. Bluey is cute but not mandatory. - It has to be achievable - asking me to run a 5k every day just is not doable (asking me to hit 5000 steps might be!) - It has to be clear! Token systems for things like ‘good behaviour’ are rubbish, and they are subjective. If I swear, have I still been good? I’d say so… my mum probably wouldn’t! Make the target something everyone understands. - Finally, if you’re not sure if your system is well-designed - stop and figure it out before going any further. Too many people have really crappy experiences with reward systems to take the risk. #pbsgp #positivebehavioursupport #pbsgoodpractice #tokensystems #dobetter
