Everything we do is about making life better for PDA people & those who care about them. Charity no. 1165038

About us

PDA Society is a small charity that has an impact much larger than our balance sheet would suggest is possible. Last year we directly supported more than 4,500 people through our training and enquiry line. 750,000 people accessed information on our site. This year we expect that number to rise to a million. PDA stands for Pathological Demand Avoidance and this name is used to describe autistic people for whom any kind of demand triggers a fear response. This is more than not wanting to do something, or refusing to do something, it is the experience of being unable to do things (even things you desperately want to do) if at a conscious or unconscious level you perceive them as threatening your autonomy. For some people even bodily urges like thirst or hunger can be perceived as demands. Yet autistic people with a PDA profile often don’t get the support they need to thrive. This causes completely avoidable harm and can lead to very poor mental health outcomes. 70% of the PDA community say a lack of understanding about PDA is a barrier to getting help. 81% of PDA people experience severe anxiety; 73% have low self-esteem and 19% experience severe depression. This is not inevitable - support & information make a radical difference. And this is where PDA Society comes in. We care about PDA people and believe that happy autonomous lives are possible – everything we do is about trying to make life better for PDA people and the people who care about them.

  • Are you staying in this Saturday night? For £10 you can catch an incredible evening of comedy from your sofa, whilst helping to provide vital support for PDAers. (For every rental, all proceeds go directly to PDA Society): https://ow.ly/5xnE50V3tyY Hosted by Stuart Laws and ‘streamed direct to your eyeballs’ from the legendary Bill Murray in London, this incredible line-up features Harriet Kemsley, Nish Kumar, Pierre Novellie and Chloe Radcliffe. This is the first time we’ve ran a streamed gig, and we're really excited that so many more people are able to join in - we’d love to know how you found it in the comments. *This event may include language or topics that some may find sensitive. The views expressed by the comedians are their own and do not necessarily reflect those of the PDA Society.

  • There's still time to get a ticket for our first streamed comedy fundraiser, launching at 7pm this evening: https://ow.ly/u5Nm50UWfMx Most of our team have a personal connection to autism and PDA, so we know first-hand how tough it can be sometimes to get to a live event. We’re really excited for the whole team to be able join in online for the first time – and we hope you are too! If you can’t make it this evening don’t worry - for one week only, you can use your ticket to watch the gig on demand at a time that suits you. As well as having a laugh, this is a great opportunity to connect with our incredible community, to raise awareness about PDA, and to increase the impact we can make together this year. • We know how important it is to find services that truly understand and welcome PDA’ers. We’ve created a new directory to help you connect with professionals who are supportive of neurodivergent people, especially those with PDA: https://ow.ly/9SWa50UXLbL The directory is still growing, and we’ll be adding more services over time. If you’re a professional offering services for individuals and families and would like to be included, please email: info@pdasociety.org.uk to find out how. Please note this directory focuses on direct support. If you're looking for PDA training or consultancy, you can find our official courses here: https://ow.ly/cjYB50UXLbK.

  • We're really excited to announce our first annual streamed comedy fundraiser! For the last year, we’ve been running regular comedy gigs in London to raise money for supporting PDAers and their families. But we know that for many people it can be tough to spend the evening at a crowded venue, never mind travelling into London. From 18th – 26th Feb you’ll be able to join in from home at a time that suits you. You can get your tickets now for this incredible line-up: https://ow.ly/2SoJ50UU7Kj *Some language and themes may be unsuitable for younger children.

  • We know that many PDA children are struggling to attend school because they can’t access the support they need. If you're home educating, our Home Education Hub has a range of helpful approaches and resources: https://ow.ly/CcjW50QpGqX While designed for families choosing elective home education (EHE), it may also be useful if you're navigating temporary home schooling or if you're an education professional supporting PDA students. If there's anything you found useful, we'd love to hear about it in the comments.
