Using arts and creativity as a vehicle to engage, empower and enrich the lives of children and young people.
About us
Pedestrian is an award winning arts and education charity specialising in music and arts education based in the heart of Leicester’s bustling city centre. Since 1998, we have built a strong track record of delivering high quality creative activity that has seen us complete over 15,500 workshops. We provide education, training and outreach projects for young people at risk, vulnerable adults and communities in Leicester, Leicestershire and across the Midlands. Our participants are often socially excluded, not in education, employment or training (NEET) or experiencing disadvantage. We believe that with the right levels of support and timely intervention everyone can achieve their goals, we call this ‘Pioneering Potential’. We have three main areas of work: ** Alternative Education Provision (AEP) ** Early Intervention & Outreach ** Progression & Training Creativity is a key part of our lives, at Pedestrian we offer the chance for everyone to explore this through music, dance, photography, street art, etc regardless of who they are and where they come from. We aim for our programmes and projects to have a long lasting social and personal impact for people and communities. As a small charity, we rely on public funding, donations and income from our programme to enable us to support some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

We’re incredibly proud to share the amazing journey of one of our learners who joined our Alternative Education Provision (AEP) in September on the SoundLab course – a musical technology program. Through support and encouragement but our tutors, she has started writing and performing her own music, showing just how transformative the power of opportunity can be. Her standout performance at our flagship Tell Tall Tales: Folktastic event left the audience moved – there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! Scan the QR code to listen to her incredible performance. #AlternativeEducation #MusicTechnology #YouthMusic #TellTallTales #SoundLab #Music #Folktastic #EducationMatters

Well we couldn't have summed it up better. Thank you again, you've been the backbone of the project!
🧙♀️ 👻 Absolutely Folktastic! 👹 🎵 What a day on Saturday at Pedestrian’s Tell Tall Tales Folktastic event at Beaumanor Hall. It was wonderful seeing the performances by those involved with the project, as well as witnessing Black Annis come to life! It was also amazing to see the interpretations of the folk stories I helped research with a group of young people earlier in the year! Congratulations to everybody involved, and nice to have a little dance with the Pedestrian team too at the end 🤣 🧡 🖤 🧡 Debbie Longley-Brown Selena Blakeley Hema Badger-Mistry Tian Mhende Iman Dalenius Rob Heslop Rendah Films The National Lottery Heritage Fund Leicestershire Music ENTER EDEM LTD NYJO Historic England

🎶Folktastic-the musical extravaganza where local legends took centre stage 🎶 Saturday saw us take over the beautiful Beaumanor Hall for our Tell Tall Tales showcase funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund bringing local folklore to life through different music genres. Thank you so much to all our amazing partners who brought our vision to life. Firstly, thanks to Sean Dudley from Carduelis Content & Historical Research and our heritage trainees for your research and foundations for the music to be created. The fantastic team at Leicestershire Music for supporting young composer Sam Nutter to create the Black Annis piece with the strings ensemble and bringing their musicians to work with English Folk Dance and Song Society and uncover the Hall Ghosts. The National Youth Jazz Collective and Zer0classikal team who only after a few meetings brought Heer and Ranjha to life. Jafro's re-telling of Anansi the Spider had us all dancing along under the Yew tree. 🕷 Tom Phillips for welcoming guests and setting the scene for our visitors with his traditional storytelling. ENTER EDEM LTD and Curve Theatre YCC actors for bringing us Black Annis and many more of the characters- we loved the child ghosts 👻 Our fantastic performers and musicians, Asa, Lucy, Lexi and Kayley whose versions of Nine O'clock Horses and The Cursed Slippers of the Papillon Hall had you on edge! Thanks to 10AD and Tye for the soundtrack to the silent disco sharing Bel the Giant's journey across the city. Headsets provided by Rose Melba Events. Sound set up by Clarence St Studios and Seamus Wong Studios. Lighting by Upstage Photography by Pete Martin and video by Rendah Films And finally, thanks to our team for pulling it all together and special thanks to our wonderful Project Development Manager Debbie Longley-Brown who has worked tirelessly on this project. But it's not over yet! Join us in the new year for the exhibition at Leicester Stories Gallery at Leicester Museum, film screening at Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre and the Tell Tall Tales vinyl made locally by sonic wax pressing. #telltalltales #heritage #leicester #youngpeople

We had the pleasure of hosting Ady Dayman from BBC Radio Leicester recently who visited our BBC Children in Need funded project, Half Term Antics-a safe, welcoming creative residency over the half term holidays in Oct, Feb and May. This project would not be possible without the Children in Need funding so if you can, please give what you can to the appeal. This project supports mental health and well-being, provides social connections, develops key skills, builds confidence and is a safe space in the heart in city for young people to express themselves. Check out the feature on the Ben Jackson show, 05/11/2024, 2hours and 44mins - https://lnkd.in/eA3rBjEN #childreninneed #radioleicester #youngpeople #leicester
