Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm
Wind Electric Power Generation
Accelerating the development of floating wind in Scotland
About us
The Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm (PFOWF) is a 100-MW development key to advancing the deployment of large-scale floating offshore wind in the UK and globally. It’s being developed off the coast of Dounreay, Caithness in Scotland and will be capable of providing clean energy to approximately 70,000 homes, equivalent to around 65% of homes in the Highlands local council area. The challenging environment of the Pentland Firth provides ideal testing conditions to demonstrate new floating wind technologies – a core aim of the project. This will offer learnings to inform the development of future floating offshore wind projects in the UK (such as ScotWind, INTOG and Celtic Sea) and the deployment of floating offshore wind globally, while contributing to building a strong local and national supply chain for the industry.

Last week’s FOW24 brought some of the familiar hurdles faced by smaller floating offshore wind projects to the fore. Demonstrator projects like Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm are vitally important not just because they contribute to sector decarbonisation and energy security, but because they accelerate learning and will drive down costs of commercial scale projects which will follow. Without these projects, Scotland and the UK will find it more difficult to develop local supply chains and fully capture the economic benefits which this globally strategic renewable technology will offer. We look forward to working with the UK Government to overcome these challenges to ensure the successful delivery of the project an industrial success story for the UK. https://lnkd.in/eeQ8F2tS

Did you know ❓ The Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm has a partnership agreement with Scrabster Harbour Trust to work together on the development of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) requirements, services and facilities. This MOU includes a commitment to work together to investigate the potential for construction support services and major component change-out for floating wind turbines. It builds on work secured by Scrabster Harbour throughout the project’s early stages including vessel mobilisation and demobilisation for geophysical and geotechnical surveys. Pentland is set to bring many benefits to the Caithness area including long-term, high value jobs and wider social benefits 🙌🏻 #Pentland #SupplyChain #EnergyWorkforce #FloatingWind

Thank you to everyone who attended The Great Debate in Aberdeen last night, especially our fantastic panel Adam Ezzamel, David McMillan, Carolyn Heeps, Mark Finch, Laura Finlay and Richard Copeland. We took a chance with this new format and the whole evening was a huge success. A packed venue with respect for all the views, but some lively interaction from the audience with some challenging questions for our panel. There was no clear answer to the question "Is there a commercial future to floating offshore wind" but one thing was clear, the future of our industry and the people who could make it happen were all in the room last night. Now on to the Floating Offshore Wind conference, looking forward to a busy day meeting more colleagues and continuing the discussions. Offshore wind is key in unlocking net zero and, as one of the cheapest sources of new power, it’s ramping up worldwide at pace 🌍 Within the sector, floating offshore wind allows for projects to be developed in deeper waters and stronger winds, like we have here in Scotland. The Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm is set to pioneer innovative technologies and deliver significant benefits to the local economy. We’re committed to advancing Scotland’s floating wind expertise and ensuring the UK continues to be at the forefront of this vital industry to secure significant private investment, create green jobs and drive growth in the supply chain. #FloatingWind
