I visited an elderly mate of mine, a decent, classy and respectable man for whom I have huge respect. He built a decent business and has enjoyed a worthy life, now in his 80th year.
He owns some property, one of which he rents though the benefits system and during my visit, his tenant turned up, with her daughter, whom I guessed to be around 20 years of age.
The rent for my pal’s tenant is paid by the government – us of course – at £1000 per month, whilst she also receives a further £1,700 per month in other benefits. Needless to say, she does not work and neither does her daughter. Such is my mate’s good nature, he lends her his Mercedes car now and again as she needs it. Both ladies appeared to be fit and healthy.
You know where I am going with this.
We are continually reminded about labour shortages whilst handouts and freebies make it pointless for so many to get a job. So cushy is our system that it is worth thousands of people risking their lives in inflatable boats crossing the English Channel to get here, having travelled through other civilised and safe countries to do so.
The election in July should have been an opportunity for change – but the only change so far has been to dig a deeper, darker hole, and this latest budget is heralding the fact that things are only going to get worse.
Think we’d already sunk to an all time low?
Think again!
