Surely it can’t be 25 years since Fat Boy Slim was number one in the charts with Praise You, the same year a young Mark Noon started working for what would later become Plan B Management Solutions. Plan B Management Solutions is holding LGV (large goods vehicle) bootcamps to upskill our teams. Once the training is successfully completed, each individual will hold a Class 2 vehicle licence and a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). An LGV 2 entitlement, also known as a Class 2 HGV lorry licence, allows you to drive a rigid lorry that weighs more than 7.5 tonnes and up to 32 tonnes. The bootcamps enable our people to gain a qualification and we can draw on their new skills to cover drivers should the need arise. We're all well versed in the importance of recycling, and plastic is one of the materials we’re most familiar with. And there’s good news: According to the British Plastics Federation, the amount of plastic collected and recycled has increased each year for at least the last twenty-five years. ♻️ In 2000, only 13,000 tonnes of plastic bottles were recycled. ♻️ Today, that figure has reached 390,000 tonnes of plastic bottles yearly. ♻️ 81% of post-consumer plastic is recovered. ♻️ 61% of plastic bottles, such as shampoo, bleach and drinks, are collected for recycling We’re proud to play a part in this positive story. Between October 2023 and September 2024, Plan B Management Solutions recycled 7,000 tonnes of mixed plastic bottles and packaging. So how does the process work? Well, we supply UK-based plastic recycling facilities where the materials are processed into different polymers, chemical compounds which are the building blocks of plastics. The materials are then treated further and turned back into a recycled resource to be used in various manufacturing applications. For example, HDPE natural plastic is used to make new milk bottles from recycled material and PET is reused as plastic packaging for drinks and other items. The UK is tenth in Europe for plastic recycling, which means we’re doing well but there is room for further improvement in 2025 and the years ahead. Plan B Management Solution's Maz Akhtar Craig Cutajar and Shaun Eldridge were delighted to join the Chartered Institute of Waste Management's Christmas Lunch in Cardiff, Wales. To enable more people to attend, including students from Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd and Local Authority representatives, Plan B Management Solutions was also an event sponsor. The day began with several speakers from the waste industry looking back at 2024 and ahead to changes we can expect during 2025. Local Partnership’s Kristy Spindler from Local Partnerships discussed the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), while Shotton Mill’s David Gigg detailed the company’s investment in paper and card recycling supported by UK and Welsh investment. Taryn Clements from Harmony Environmental considered how waste management companies can evidence their performance to third parties and DEFRA’s Margaret Bates addressed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Vicki Hughes, CIMW’s Junior Vice President, wrapped up proceedings with the Institute’s view on key topics. The event was held at the Coal Exchange Hotel, which provided an illustrious backdrop. Completed in 1886, the original purpose of the building was a meeting place for merchants and traders to sell coal. At one time, the price of the world’s coal was determined here and the first ever £1,000,000 deal was agreed on site too. Plan B Management Solution’s Natasha Jeffrey Solutions Specialist in Graphics Design & Data, recently undertook PRINCE2.com project management training, a methodology that’s externally recognised and accredited. Natasha is the first of our consultancy team to do so with others due to follow in her footsteps. She says, “The training was intense on the first day but it started to get a little easier by day three. It helped that the teacher, Thomas, was excellent. The course has given me ideas about how to better structure my work so that other people can get involved more easily. I’m keen to improve in my current role as much as possible. Safety is of paramount importance to Plan B Management Solutions, whether we’re advising our clients on how to keep their workers safe at recycling sites or following best practice on collection rounds, which is why we jumped at the chance to attend the 2024 Health & Safety (H&S) conference run by letsrecycle.com. The conference discussed the latest H&S work taking place within the waste and recycling sector. Plan B Management Solution’s Jemma Thripp, responsible for Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality, Kai Wiggins, Operations Service Manager, and Gareth Barnes Business Manager, attended. As part of the day’s events, they took part in a mock trial run by law firm Pinsent Masons, with delegates acting as jurors and delivering verdicts. The aim was to provide practical insights into legal processes and compliance issues in our sector. “The mock trial gave us insight into the criminal process following a serious incident at a waste facility. We all found the event very interesting and will bring what we learnt back to the Plan B Management Solutions team,” says Gareth. A day in the life of Janet Jones, administrator, call handler and driver for Plan B Management Solutions. 🔶 Typical day? Currently, I’m working on our rollout round, which is when we distribute our green biodegradable and refuse sacks all across the borough. I don’t really have a typical day because I have multiple roles with Plan B including admin tasks, answering calls, and driving too. I’m mostly supposed to be in our call centre but I have experience working on lorries and vans. I enjoy driving and being out and about. 🔶 Teamwork? When working on the rounds, working as a team is a crucial part of my role as a driver. Working alongside a loader enables me to get the job done more efficiently. 🔶 Favourite part of your role? I love being outside whether it's raining cats and dogs or a lovely sunny afternoon. I also enjoy interacting with people while I’m working. 🔶 What do you like about Plan B Management Solutions?
