📢 70 international financial institutions representing assets worth USD 6.8 trillion are calling on petrochemical companies to address plastic pollution issues. Petrochemical companies are a major contributor to plastic production, which is forecast to triple by 2060, meaning petrochemical companies will become the primary driver of oil demand growth. As the plastic pollution crisis mounts and demands for a Global Plastics Treaty grow, petrochemical companies have stalled progress in negotiations by: 1. Resisting calls to include the full life cycle of plastics 2. Opposing the reduction of plastic production 3. Opposing the inclusion of polymer production in the treaty Petrochemical companies are exposed to significant plastics-related risks, which are financially material for corporates and their investors. Therefore, the collective Investor Statement requests petrochemical companies to: ➡ Disclose and define strategies ➡ Address toxic polymers and chemicals ➡ Develop sustainable infrastructure ➡ Establish governance ➡ Support international agreements Read the Investor Statement here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/dUrhB9fB #BeatPlasticPollution #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #PlasticPollution #Petrochemicals #ToxicChemicals #FossilFuels #INC4 #PlasticRisk #UpstreamSolutions #ClimateChange #Stewardship #ResponsibleInvestors

⚠️ Did you know 16,000 chemicals are used in plastics, with over half untested for their impact on health and the environment? A new chemical substance is registered every 1.4 minutes - outpacing our capacity to assess risks. 🚨 These chemicals leach into ecosystems and food chains, causing widespread harm. That’s why 80 financial institutions representing USD 7.3 trillion are calling for petrochemical companies producing plastic polymers to: ➡️ Address polymers and chemicals of concern in their products. ➡️ Publicly support an ambitious international legally binding instrument for ending plastic pollution. As the final round of UN-led Global Plastics Treaty negotiations reach their final days, negotiating parties must come together to reach an ambitious, binding treaty addressing the full plastic lifecycle in order to #BeatPlasticPollution Learn more: 📣 Investor Asks: https://lnkd.in/dUrhB9fB 📖 Toxic chemicals report: https://lnkd.in/eW6EZZNh #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #INC5 #FullLifeCycle #Sustainability #PlasticPollution #ToxicChemicals #CircularEconomy #ESG #InvestorAction #ResponsibleInvestment Minderoo Foundation Break Free From Plastic UN Environment Programme ChemSec

🚨 Planet Tracker’s analysis reveals setbacks in Air Liquide's climate transition progress. Air Liquide is likely to align with a 2°C warming scenario by 2030, a regression from last year’s 1.5°C alignment expectation. While the company has committed 50% of its €16 billion investments by 2025 to decarbonisation, key challenges remain: 1️⃣ Slight decrease in total emissions (-0.5% in four years) vs. a 53.1% rise in upstream Scope 3. 2️⃣ Lack of financial disclosures regarding climate risks. 3️⃣ No Scope 3 targets. Positive steps taken include: ➡️ Climate-linked executive compensation. ➡️ Broad engagement with suppliers. ➡️ The exit from the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) Association. To achieve a 1.5°C pathway alignment, Scope 3 targets, increased transparency, and measurable emissions-linked investments are crucial. Deep sea mining: mining for metals or trouble❓ Planet Tracker’s latest report analyses the 12 countries most economically dependent on land-based mining of copper, cobalt, nickel, and manganese. From 2018 to 2022 these metals: ➡️ Generated over $560 billion annually in exports. ➡️ Made up 39% of total export earnings. ➡️ Were equivalent to 16% GDP on average. Deep sea mining poses a significant economic risk to these countries, 6 of which are lower middle- or low-income, making them highly vulnerable to price shocks from deep sea mining. Added to this are the risks deep sea mining poses to ocean ecosystems, the climate, natural capital, corporate profits, and investor returns. ❌ There is no just transition to deep sea mining. Could corporates pay $2 billion annually for genetic data? At the recent Biodiversity COP16 in Colombia, nations agreed to create a funding mechanism to protect global genetic resources. This would require sectors like pharma, biotech and cosmetics - which profit from genetic material - to share their gains with developing countries and Indigenous Peoples. Proposed models include: ➡️ 0.1% charge on sales, potentially raising $2.2 billion/year. ➡️ 1% charge on profits, estimated at $2.0 billion/year. Negotiators have until 2026 to agree the details. 🌏 Our colleague Nicole Kozlowski is representing Planet Tracker at the INC-5, advocating for an ambitious, legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution. Our goal is a treaty that addresses the full lifecycle of plastics, eliminates hazardous chemicals, and tackles the financial, ecological, and human health risks they pose. Get in touch with Nicole if you are on the ground and would like to connect!
📢 The final round of the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations is officially underway here in Busan, Korea! After a weekend of pre-meetings and events, we’re now closely following negotiators as they work towards what we hope will be an ambitious and legally binding instrument to tackle plastic pollution. ✅ The finance sector, including signatories of the Petrochemical Investor Statement, has been calling for urgent and decisive action to address the financial, ecological, and human health risks of plastic pollution. A truly ambitious treaty must include rules that address the entire lifecycle of plastics, from polymer production to end-of-life disposal, and eliminate hazardous chemicals in plastics. ❗A full lifecycle approach is all the more critical as new analysis from InfluenceMap reveals that chemical and petrochemical companies are heavily opposing such measures, accounting for 93% of unsupportive corporate engagement on the treaty. 🌍We’ll be closely monitoring the negotiations throughout the week. If you’re here in Busan and would like to connect, please reach out! 📄 Petrochemical Investor Statement: https://lnkd.in/eXSGj3sF 📄 InfluenceMap Analysis: https://lnkd.in/e4kTady8 #PlasticsTreaty #INC5 #EndPlasticPollution John Willis, Chris Coggin, Arthur van Mansvelt, Bethany Davies, Kerry Moss, Freek van Til, Planet Tracker, Richard Wielechowski , Arianna Manili , Thalia Bofiliou

📣 We are excited to announce that 10 new investors have signed the Petrochemical Investor Statement, bringing the total to 80 financial institutions representing AUM 7.3 trillion USD, advocating for an ambitious, international and legally binding plastics treaty. The upcoming INC-5 negotiations represents a critical opportunity to address the escalating financial, ecological, and human health risks posed by plastic pollution. Planet Tracker's Nicole Kozlowski will be there, advocating for the finance sector’s call for: ➡ Binding rules covering the full lifecycle of plastics, including polymer production. ➡ Urgent action to eliminate hazardous chemicals. The finance sector’s collective voice is critical as we approach these treaty negotiations. Together, we can drive meaningful, systemic change. 📍 Reach out if you are on the ground at INC-5 and would like to connect. A Global Plastics Treaty must include the full lifecycle of plastics. Learn why below ⬇ Our Head of Engagement, Nicole Kozlowski, will be attending INC-5. Reach out if you'd like to chat in person about our plastics research or the Petrochemical Investor Statement. #BeatPlasticPollution
📢 New data shows that five key members of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste — ExxonMobil, Dow, Shell, TotalEnergies, and ChevronPhillips—have diverted just 0.04% of the plastic waste they produced over the past five years. This stark contrast raises serious questions - yet again- about the Alliance's commitment to tackling plastic pollution and highlights the need for real, systemic change. ExxonMobil has claimed that “plastics aren’t the problem—plastic waste is,” but this approach shifts the focus away from upstream solutions and overlooks the critical role plastic production plays. Tackling waste without addressing production is like trying to empty a flooding sink without turning off the tap... At Planet Tracker, we’ve been advocating for the inclusion of polymer production in the treaty. Investors representing $7 trillion in assets have signed our Petrochemical Investor Statement, calling on petrochemical companies to support an ambitious, legally binding plastics treaty that tackles the full lifecycle of plastics, including production. Next week at INC-5, we’ll continue this push. The treaty negotiations in Busan represent a pivotal moment to turn ambition into action and ensure polymer production is part of the solution. 🔵 Link to Planet Tracker's research on the AEPW: https://lnkd.in/eFVVFmXu 🔵 Link to the Petrochemical Investor Statement: https://lnkd.in/eXSGj3sF 🔵 Link to news article: https://lnkd.in/ee2gQnZR #PlasticsTreaty #Sustainability #PlanetTracker #INC5 #EndPlasticPollution
