Heritage Potential provided in-depth Historic Research to secure Planning and Listed Building Consents for works to the historic archway at the Grade II* Bedford Swan Hotel. This beautiful 18th-century hotel was designed specifically for the 5th Duke of Bedford to be used as his political office. The interiors of the hotel have an interesting story to tell: the staircase predates the building, having been moved to the newly constructed Swan from the early 17th-century Houghton House, which the Duke dismantled in the late 18th century. Interestingly, the ruins of Houghton House still stand as a Grade I listed building and are owned by English Heritage. Thanks to meticulous historic and archival research, the proposed works were designed with the historic context of the building in mind, ensuring a cohesive and historically accurate look across the hotel complex. #HeritageConservation #HistoricBuildings #BedfordSwanHotel #EnglishHeritage #ArchitecturalHistory

How do we shape sustainable, healthy and equitable places? That was a key theme of our Urban Design Course that came to a close last week with an Urban Design Skills workshop in Dartford. Led by the equally brilliant Vinita Dhume (Director of Urban Design, Savills) and Helen Goodwin PhD (Head of Programmes, Design South East), this was the last in our five-part series by Kent Design exploring the key principles of urban design.   We took attendees through a series of presentations to investigate urban design within town centres, specifically within the context of Dartford, then braved the rain with a site visit and a place-based masterplanning exercise, all of which encouraged thought-provoking conversations throughout the day.    Three key learnings from the workshop:  1) We can encourage interventions in urban design which range from the micro to the macro, both through ’tactical urbanism’ and meanwhile uses, right through to larger scale initiatives which help to stitch together a town centre and make it an attractive place to visit and dwell. Heritage Potential had the pleasure of visiting St Albans Cathedral and the city on World Town Planning Day!   Heritage Potential were honoured to visit the stunning St Albans Cathedral this past Friday. As one of the most impressive cathedrals in the country, featuring the largest nave of 85 metres, St Albans Cathedral continually captivates and inspires. The use of Roman bricks and tiles saved from the ruins of Roman Verulamium as a main element for the construction, the architectural diversity of the later additions to the cathedral, and the enchanting medieval wall paintings are truly remarkable.   During our visit, we were also delighted to share our knowledge and experience on the planning system and heritage implications through a CPD session with the Estate Team of St Albans Cathedral.
