Plantlife is the global charity working to secure a world rich in wild plants and fungi.

About us

Plantlife is the global charity working to secure a world rich in wild plants and fungi. Founded in 1989, Plantlife has 15,000 members and supporters. Wild plants and fungi are the foundation of all life on Earth. Plantlife enhances, restores, protects and celebrates our natural heritage through working with landowners, other conservation organisations, public and private bodies and the wider public. Plantlife owns 23 nature reserves covering nearly 4,500 acres across England, Scotland and Wales. We were instrumental in the creation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, the Important Plant Area network and we are a member of Planta Europa, a pan-European network of over 60 wild plant conservation organisations. We are governed by a board of 12 trustees and have around 70 staff, located across the UK. We also support a team of 1500 volunteers who work in the field, at events and in our offices. A registered charity, Plantlife is funded by donations from its members and supporters, through grants and charitable trusts and through its pioneering land management advice and projects.

  • It’s #WorldSoilDay and we’re celebrating our amazing peatlands!🌱 Peatlands are unique #ecosystems which support incredible #biodiversity and store significant amounts of carbon🌎 However, they are extensively destroyed for the extraction of peat for the horticultural industry🚨 This continuing extraction not only destroys precious habitats, but releases hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year (from peat use in gardening in the UK alone!). That's why we're dedicated to implementing a ban on the sale of peat for horticultural use in all four nations of the UK, as part of the Peat-Free Partnership. Want to make a difference for our peatlands?🌷 Use our template to tell your MP you want an end to peat sales 👉 https://lnkd.in/eSQ5PzsR #PeatFree #PeatFreeGardening #Peatlands #Bogs #BogDay #SoilDay #Horticulture #Gardening #Peat

  • We've been speaking up for Wales' rainforests in the Senedd as part of the Alliance for Wales’ Rainforests! 🎉     Wales’ rare temperate rainforests, remnants of an ancient woodland landscape which now cover less than 1% of the planet, are in danger ⚠️      These magical woodlands host over 400 rare species of mosses, lichens, and other wildlife, acting as biodiversity hotspots and natural carbon sinks 🌿      However, they are under threat from invasive species, habitat degradation, and lack of protection.    The Alliance’s new State of Wales’ Rainforests report, launched in the Senedd on Tuesday, is a wake-up call to take immediate action to save these precious ecosystems. The report urges Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government to take urgent action to protect these ecological treasures before it's too late 📢      During this key event Adam Thorogood, Plantlife’s Rainforest Programme Manager spoke passionately about the need for better protection and appropriate management of Wales’ remaining rainforests alongside Neil Lambert, Head of Land RSPB Cymru, Gethin Davies, Celtic Rainforests Wales Project Manager and Tim Birch Head of Advocacy, Wildlife Trusts Wales 🌲   To work towards protecting and restoring these unique habitats, this report was launched as part of the new Alliance for Wales’ Rainforests (AWR) - a partnership of leading conservation organisations working together for a brighter future 🌲      Along with us, the AWR brings together The Woodland Trust Cymru , The Wildlife Trusts Wales, RSPB Cymru, National Trust Cymru & Awdurdod Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri // Eryri National Park Authority.  Thank you to everyone who joined us for this landmark event and is speaking up for Wales' rainforests. • In collaboration with NGO partners, we champion the need to see our species valued, respected and protected🌱 This is at the heart of our work to deliver the nature recovery targets in the Global #Biodiversity Framework🌎 But delivering on the GBF targets is far too big of a task for Plantlife and partners alone. It needs to involve people, #communities, businesses and organisations across the whole of society👫 This principle lies at the heart of the Local Nature Recovery Strategies (#LNRSs), which are being developed across England to plan and target action for nature’s recovery🌼 LNRSs have the power to become a vital bridge, linking up high level global targets with action for species on the ground🌿 Learn more👇

Global targets for nature are welcome. But with our recent analysis showing policy progress on goals agreed at COP16 isn't going anywhere near fast enough, it's clear we need more action. So how do we bridge the gap between targets & tangible progress? In our latest blog Plantlife International, People's Trust for Endangered Species & Bat Conservation Trust set out the potential of Local Nature Recovery Strategies to scale up to help England meet national and international commitments to protect biodiversity. • With 1 in 9 species at risk of extinction in Scotland, we welcome the new long term plan for nature recovery from The Scottish Government 🌿 We are pleased to see a commitment to introduce statutory nature restoration targets, proposal of actions to recover threatened species and intention to publish the Scottish Plant Biodiversity Strategy 🌍 Unfortunately, targeted action for our valuable species-rich grasslands is distinctly missing 🌱 The framework is a positive step forward in many ways, but there is still work to be done and urgent action is needed now 📢 Read our full statement from Alistair Whyte, Head of Plantlife Scotland 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6aspy68 #Scotland #ScottishPolicy #Policy #Biodiversity #ClimateChange #SpeciesRecovery #Conservation #PlantConservation #ActionNow #Grasslands #Rainforests #TemperateRainforests #ScotlandsRainforests

  • We welcome Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government commitment to require farmers to manage 10% of their land as habitat for biodiversity if they're to benefit from funding available under the new SFS 🌱   🌿 It is also encouraging to see species-rich grasslands getting their carbon sequestration and storage roles recognised.    🚜 90% of Welsh land is farmed, so it's key this land contributes towards nature & carbon targets    We are concerned that insufficient advice for farmers planning to expand tree cover may lead to good biodiverse habitats being displaced by trees. We strongly encourage the Welsh Government to put in place sufficient finance to provide a full programme of nature focused actions in the Optional layer of SFS, on top of the funding which is being promised for tree planting and carbon sequestration actions.    Read our full statement  👉 https://lnkd.in/e6aspy68 / Rydym yn croesawu ymrwymiad @LlywodraethCym i ddisgwyl ffermwyr i reoli 10% o’u tir fel cynefin ar gyfer bioamrywiaeth os ydynt am gael budd o’r arian a fydd ar gael o dan y C.Ff.C newydd 🌿   🌱 Rydym yn falch y bydd rôl glaswelltiroedd parhaol llawn rhywogaethau yn cael ei gydnabod fel modd o storio carbon yn y C.Ff.C newydd.    🚜 Mae 90% o dir Cymru’n cael ei ffermio, a felly mae’n hanfodol bod y tir yma’n cyfrannu at dargedau natur a charbon.    Rydym yn poeni y gall cyngor annigonol i ffermwyr sydd yn cynllunio i ehangu coed ar eu tir arwain at gynefinoedd da llawn bioamrywiaeth yn diflannu o dan goed.  Rydym yn annog Llywodraeth Cymru’n gryf i ddarparu cyllid digonol er mwyn darparu rhaglen llawn gweithredoedd er budd natur yn haen Opsiynol C.Ff.C ar ben y cyllid sydd wedi cael ei addo ar gyfer plannu coed a gweithredoedd i ddal a storio carbon.  Darllenwch y datganiad llawn yma. 👉https://lnkd.in/e6aspy68    #Farming #Agriculture #SFS #Cymru #Wales #Grasslands  #biodiversity #meadows #SFS

  • The announcement of the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy Framework from The Scottish Government is approaching! ⏰ Here is what we hope to see 👇 1️⃣ It must be ambitious and transformational. The framework needs to clearly set out the key steps needed to reverse nature loss by 2045 and have legally binding targets. 2️⃣ Scotland is home to internationally important temperate #rainforest & valuable species-rich #grasslands. We need a comprehensive programme of ecosystem restoration, with new actions to amplify progress at pace, particularly for the above habitats. 3️⃣ 1 in 9 species in Scotland are under threat of extinction. We urgently need a comprehensive programme of species recovery, which includes targeted action for the most vulnerable species. 📢 The Scottish Government has the opportunity to implement lasting and positive change for our natural world in the new Scottish Biodiversity Framework. While we wait for the announcement, find out more about our work in Scotland 🫱 https://lnkd.in/e7CB2DyQ #Scotland #ScottishPolicy #ScottishBiodiversity #ScotlandsRainforests
