Plymouth Octopus (POP)
Non-profit Organizations
Building strong grassroots organisations, charities, and social enterprises in Plymouth
About us
Our purpose is to build strong grassroots organisations, charities and social enterprises by supporting them to work together and take a lead in creating change. We are driven by the energy, passion and skills of local people taking action to make our society and environment a better place to live. A small team of dedicated staff, associates and trustees do this by influencing, connecting, training and creating opportunities. We campaign and advocate for system and culture change. The way we make decisions, organise our work, who we involve and how we support people to be involved, who owns assets all have a huge impact on how well we can achieve our intended outcomes. We work together with the public sector, grant makers and businesses to achieve the outcomes we all wish to see. POPs role is to help amplify citizens voices directly and through the role of community groups and grassroots. Part of this is to show how important the Voluntary, Community & Social Enterprise (VCSE) is to Plymouth. We collate, capture and display the data we think is important to achieving greater recognition of the sector economically and socially.

And that's a wrap!🥳 The POP AGM 2024 on Tuesday 5th November 2024 was a thoughtful and impactful event, where the POP Team, Associates, Trustees, and Members got to spend time with each other, catch up with old friends and make new ones, while reflecting deeply on the processes and themes relevant to our communities. “How can we Be More Plymouth?” was the question resonating through the speeches, the deep democracy facilitated exercises, and the moving and inspiring presentations by POP Members in the open mic. 🙏 A big thank you to everyone who showed up, what a beautiful showcase of our communities👥 #belonginplymouth #bemoreplymouth #plymouth #grassroots #plymouthcommunity #plymouthevents #AGM

📢 We look forward to seeing you on 5th November at our AGM to together explore what it means to Be More Plymouth! Join us in a range of activities including a facilitated discussion, lunch and networking, and an introduction to the shared narrative we have been working on. Check out CEO Matt Bell's post on a part of the narrative below. Book your place here: https://lnkd.in/etwpDBaY
Day 28 of a #sharednarrative for #Plymouth: What is System Convening? There is no one ‘system convener’ in a place but often varied, each of whom can play a role in different contexts. “Systems conveners look at the social landscape in which they operate—an organization, a big challenge, a city, a community, a field, a country, the world—and they see unrealized potential across traditional boundaries and silos. Their stance is both visionary and pragmatic. They work to open spaces for new kinds of conversations between people on different sides of a boundary, for example, a geographic, cultural, disciplinary, political, organizational, or social class boundary.” Wenger & Trayner: https://buff.ly/3Z37zLk Image: an overview of ‘system convening’ reproduced from: https://buff.ly/3YXBFjE Full Plymouth Octopus(POP) narrative: https://buff.ly/4dQZbD1 POP learning and thinking: https://buff.ly/4fZAcPG Dark Matter Labs @Annette https://buff.ly/3YSF4Ac Sky Space Team Development Cic @Jen https://buff.ly/3yMsPK #BEMOREPLYMOUTH #fairer #greener #futurism #regenerativefutures #learning #sharednarrative #plymouth #systemconvening #community #grassroots #funding #grantmaking

Our AGM is nearly only a month away! There is still time to book to attend on 5 November! Follow the link https://lnkd.in/etwpDBaY to join POP at this year's annual community festival and help us explore what it means to ‘Be More Plymouth’!
Day 22 of a #sharednarrative for #Plymouth: Out of our deep care, we build systems and organisations that embodies our humanness. As Kate Raworth reminds us, the purpose of an economy is to meet the needs of all people within the means of the planet. That takes all of us at home, at work and together as a society to be able to work towards that goal. What do we need to do to build from our humanness outwards and upwards, creating cross-sector alliances that unite across goals that truly face the challenges of the future? 🔉 We are getting excited for our AGM event on Tuesday the 5th of November! 🎂 Happy birthday 🎂 to our CEO Matt Bell, who will be talking about the shared narrative and the hopes for a brighter future we can imagine and create only together. Sign up for free to attend the event: https://lnkd.in/etwpDBaY
Day 15 of a #sharednarrative for #Plymouth: today is my birthday 🎊 🎂 🎉 so it feels fitting that it is the turning point in the narrative from exploring our reality and the sense of despair or denial this can bring into a brighter future. Onwards and upwards! We think that if we know the scale of the challenges and can be real about the nature of their interconnectedness and what that asks of us; we have everything we need to support each other on the emotional journey by using our deep self knowledge, wisdom and technologies and learning from history to step into the future. We don't think the innovation is in the new, but being brave and embodying what we already know to be true. Plymouth Octopus (POP) reposted this
Writer | Founder of Story Juice | Narrative Experience Designer | Creative Director | Immersive Storyteller | Artist Researcher
I’m so so proud of the writing and community we have created in making !NPRINT - New Writing, Vol.1. There are poems written as crossword puzzles and recipes, moving pieces of flash fiction about transformations, war protest songs and so much more! These amazing writers shared their hearts and souls performing their pieces at the launch and it was a very beautiful thing to witness and celebrate. At the interval one audience member said: “I’ve felt so many emotions already,” which is such a wonderful tribute to everyone’s courage, craft and collaboration. I’m massively grateful for how much positive energy I’ve been gifted in this project, a partnership between my own Story Juice and brilliant Alan Qualtrough's Kiss & Bite Press at Ocean Studios. Huge thanks to Alan for securing funding from Plymouth Octopus(POP) to build a library Ocean Studios and run the creative writing and publishing workshops to create !NPRINT. Also to Leadworks for being incredible hosts for our launch. Our journal is a unique, limited edition and you can buy a copy for £5 from Kiss & Bite until we’ve run out! Check out the documentation of last week's launch in this Insta reel. Pic and video credits Hannah Wood and Debbie Geraghty.

📢 ANNOUNCEMENT 📢 💭 POP AGM 2024 - Can We ‘Be More Plymouth’? 💭 Join POP at this year's annual community festival on Tuesday 5th November and help us explore what it means to ‘Be More Plymouth’! In recent years we’ve had some great inspirational speakers at our AGM but this year POP is looking to you for inspiration. Since the beginning of the year the POP team has been considering our work, our city and our future. We all know that we are facing the reality of multiple simultaneous complex local, national and global challenges and yet, here at home, we are witnessing extraordinary examples of everyday community heroism – big and small. We'll introduce a shared narrative for the city that we have been crafting this year with input from many, before hosting an open dialogue to dive deeper into our collective story. We believe that by sharing, and learning from each other, we can better create a future that's vibrant and inclusive: ‘more’ Plymouth, not ‘less’. A place where diversity and creativity thrive – we believe it is in the differences between us (liminal spaces) that the excitement lies. But in order to #BeMorePlymouth, we must first see more Plymouth. Come and join us for the conversation. Register for free here: https://lnkd.in/etwpDBaY
