  • We're proud to share the winning entry from this year's Foster Portsmouth Christmas e-card design competition. The design, by one of the 7-year-old children in our care, is of a reindeer and includes a message of peace at Christmas. We'd like to express our congratulations to him, and thank all our entrants for sharing their fabulous festive designs with us. The winning design will be used by the Children, Families and Education department at Portsmouth City Council for their annual Christmas e-card to bring some festive cheer this season. #christmascard #competition #childreninourcare #fostering

    • Child's drawing of a reindeer with child's writing saying they wish for peace at Christmas.
  • We've bought £580 of cat food for Second Chance Portsmouth Cats rescue centre this Christmas, from money raised at Southsea car boot sales. Each year, all profit generated from the car boot sales is given to local community projects and charities; and in the New Year other local animal shelters will benefit from the remaining money raised. We're grateful to Jollyes pet shop for giving us a significant discount and to Mandrake Events who organise our car boots. None of this would be possible without the support from residents going to the car boot sales. The Southsea car boot sale returns to Southsea Common, off Duisburg Way on Easter Sunday (20 April). • Planning permission has been granted for a new health and wellbeing hub at Bransbury Park, which will include a GP surgery, a 25-metre swimming pool, a learner pool, a gym, fitness studios, and new changing facilities for outdoor activities. We've worked closely with GT3 Architects and contractors Willmott Dixon to create a modern leisure centre that will offer a wide range of health and wellness activities. Work will start with the building of the new playground, which should be finished by summer 2025. It's likely the hoardings for the new building will go up in autumn 2025, with the construction starting shortly after that. • We're delighted to have been recognised at the recent UK Bus Awards, winning the Partnership for Excellence award and being highly commended in the Going for Growth category! 🥇 🚍 The council, alongside local bus operators Stagecoach (South) Limited and First Bus Solent, was recognised for the success of the local partnership in delivering the Portsmouth Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). Since January 2022, the council has been investing in the city’s bus network with the Portsmouth Bus Service Improvement Plan, a £48.3 million Department for Transport-funded grant to transform bus services in the city which has enhanced the accessibility, convenience, and affordability of bus travel in Portsmouth. Key improvements include a range of ticketing deals and fare free schemes to encourage people to try out the bus, as well as service improvements, such as two 24/7 bus routes and more buses at evenings and weekends, when people need them the most. The incentives are designed to make bus travel more attractive, as well as improve the ease of traffic flow and enhance the reliability of services for everyone travelling in Portsmouth. Congratulations to everyone involved in this achievement, and a huge thank you to our partners for their continued support!

  • Around 2,500 Portsmouth households aren't claiming the Pension Credit they should be. That's an extra £3,900 on average a year that thousands of pensioners are missing out on. Is your parent or grandparent one of them? Many aren't aware that they're entitled to extra money that could really help. If you think your loved one may be missing out, please encourage them to contact the council on 023 9284 1047 to speak to someone about the help available. Who's eligible? Those who are single and of pension age with a total weekly income under £218 are likely to get it. Those with a weekly income of under £235 may get it. For couples, both must be pension age, and those with a combined weekly income under £333 are likely to get it, those with a combined income under £350 might get it. Even those with a higher income might still be eligible if they have a disability, care for someone or have housing costs. The council is also offering Older Persons Energy Payments for some pensioners on low income who missed out on the government's Winter Fuel Payment. Find out more about this and Pension Credit on our website: https://lnkd.in/e8SngzfT
